@BenAveling

Right, cause all those good people whose lives were saved because they had a gun and were able to protect themselves... thats not a "legitimate use" and wouldnt have had a negative impact if it was taken away.... Quite obviously your statement is disproven by example, even one example disproves it.

@ErikUden @Elleaster

I recently switched from to ... mostly like it but there is one thing that is likely going to cause me to go back to a chrome based browser.... it doesnt handle my 100 tabs very well.

On chrome no matter how many tabs i opened they would size shrink so they all fit... librewolf (and i presume all FF based browser) give me about 20 tabs i can see and then i have to scroll throught hem... As someone who has hundreds of tabs open that just is unmanageable...

Well I almost died in a trash avalanch at my desk again... guess its time to clean...

@mzan @freemo rule of law has not been very effective though. The USA daily does things the charter says is never to be done, and activist judges work to make up laws at their benches. On rare occasion somebody actually steps in and fixes isolated cases of it, but, generally I'd say rule of law is a resounding failure as a concept

@freemo fun fact: in ancient Greece, democracy was all about the "power" (i.e. 'crazia') to the citzens (i.e. 'demos'), through a majority vote during an assembly, after a free discussion. There were no clear concepts of individual rights and respect of the minority, like in modern democracies. There were no supreme constitutional rights: if the majority vote decides something, this will be effective.

The assembly was used for direct government, and also for judging people in trials. For example Socrate was condemned from a jury of 500 or more citizens. They did not applied codified laws, but they decided that what he was doing was a danger for the values of the community, because the majority of the assembly decided so.

And more important this speaks to the state of the world right now... Or at least the USA and most English speaking countries... We are so polarized it has become about the majority ruling and oppressive and explicitly silencing the minority (though who is the majority changes day by day)....

In fact compromise with the other side is seen almost as being on the other side and will make you the enemy if you even suggest it as a possibility to your own "team" (red or blue).

This failed view of democracy as a majority ruling against the minority that we have in the USA is exactly why we are headed straight towards either collapse or revolution... and until people start seeing compromise across the aisle as desirable again our course to that end will be inevitable.

We have this misconception that #Democracy is executing the will of the majority... But thats not true. Any democracy that gives 51% of people what...

We have this misconception that is executing the will of the majority... But thats not true.

Any democracy that gives 51% of people what they want, even when that is abusive to the wishes of the 49% will not survive, that leads to revolution... democracy has never been about majority rule.

What democracy is about is rule by the people, ALL the people. Any successful system will reach agreements that nearly everyone will be happy enough with so as not to pick up a gun and shoot the other side for oppressing them. Its about compromising enough that everyone can settle rather than agree.

This is exactly why the electorial college and other elements of government exist rather than a simple 51% rule... because we want to make sure any idea has atleast some level of support from most represented groups... so in the end the ones who may not like the vote can at least live with it.

not (just) grub, no. it's a new gnu project, still release candidate, a distribution of boot firmware for motherboards, the stuff that loads the boot loader. the flashable images contain grub though, because it's convenient.

you may have heard of GNU Libreboot before. it used to be free software, but it left GNU and then forked things up to embrace, expand and enable binary blobs to take away the freedom from its users. GNU boot is the continuation of what Libreboot should have never ceased to be, and thus the deserving recipient of all the praise and recommendation we used to place on Libreboot back when it deserving of that name, before it became Lie-breboot

Whats your favorite flavor of ?

I really hope we never reach the point where someone implements a way to silence OTHER people from having an opinion about your post... You have every right to decide what you see, you have no right to decide what other people can see. If i want to see what people have to say about your comment, I should be able to, and you should be powerless to stop me.

One thing that I don't like about Mastodon is that I can't edit the replies to my post. So, if someone replies to something I said with a non sequi...
There is also an altruistic aspect to insurance. Your premiums are funding the defense of other victims. In a well run insurance company, premiums pretty much match expenses, and profits come from investing the reserves.

Just a reminder, if you carry a on your person (open or concealed carry), please dont forget to get carry insurance. Should you ever have to do the unthinkable and use your gun to save your life or someone elses you will want to know you have access to all the lawyers and funds you need...

If you can afford it I suggest you get two policies just in case, they are pretty cheap.

.oO woohoo! i've updated both of my laptops to gnuboot 0.1-rc1, to celebrate GNU's 40th anniversary. I'm hacking more happily now :-)

I just moved from to browser... we will see if this remains my new browser... But first impressions are positive.

Found a nice little group of guys, mostly in west virginia who apparently are on 3.803MHz every night 8 - 9pm... it is right in the sweet spot for my antenna (80 meters band i have a limited window where it tunes up very nicely). Happy I found the group so i have something to do. All really clear tonight, s9+10 so very promising. its about a 280 mile contact, which is pretty decent for 80m too.

First truly magical #auroraborealis of the season for me. Glad I got dressed and ventured outside. And the dog got an extra walk so he was happy too! #aurora #northernlights #norrsken

@freemo great stuff! Make the most of Cycle 25, it's a long time between drinks when it falls off. Check in to 6m occasionally, too. I have hit some 6m band openings from VK2 to Japan recently.
