So I managed to add #ActivityPub to a static website I just put together. I will be modifying it so I use the same code on my personal blog too.
Basically it supports followers, and when a new page is added (like a news entry, or a new project) then if your following the website it will show as a status in your feed.
Even cooler, if you comment or like the status from here you will see that comment and status on the website. Yes I can block people if they abuse this, as well as servers.
Check it out by following @flear which represents https://flear.org
Its a very early beta, so the look of the site will still be heavily modified and I will add some more #AP support soon. But this covers all the basics needs.

One of my favourite (and oh so simple) hacker tricks is to abuse JSON support in APIs and pass TRUE instead of the actual API key. If the code does loose comparison, you don't need the key! 😎 😈 🍿

@freemo Transmitting on a military or FAA frequency is one answer that seems to work here.

A federated comment backend for websites supporting static website generators:
Love the idea... my only question... why the hell matrix protocol. That sounds like an odd choice to support this...
> I guess we’ll have to disagree on this one.
Ok certainly nothing wrong with that... ill listen.
> I agree with the general sentiment – a little bias can reinforce itself over time, until you have the highly polarized society that social media algorithms have helped create. So any bias should be examined critically.
Good, yes, agreed so far
> However, I’m *sure* that you’ll have a very hard time finding a news story that is accurate, complete, and unbiased, no matter the source.
Yes absolutely. In fact one reason I am so vocal about it is because very very few news agencies or journalist exist who maintain journalistic integrity. The proper response isnt to accept it, its to call it out when we see it and reward it when we dont, as consumers. Moreover, we should find solutions or ideologies that help ensure journalistic integrity is maximized. Accepting it doesnt do that.
I will tell you what does.. two things really.
1) lack of explicit bias or bias as a feature (like we have here).
2) lack of a for-profit model.
For #1 we discussed this already alot so ill leave that to the rest of the discussion
#2 is important though// Anyone who knows me on here will tell you, im pretty damn capitalistic, I start companies for almost for a living, I very much lean center (left of center, but center) and economically at least I lean right (socially and welfare programs I lean left). So I am the **last** person anyone expects to be anti for-profit... but there are two places I am non-profit all the way, healthcare, and journalism. Because in both these fields maximizing profits is counter to their intended purpose of making healthcare affordable, or journalism faithful to journalistic integrity.
> In short (j/k I talk a lot), I don’t accept the premise that good journalism is devoid of any kind of bias. It is reporting and story-telling by humans, and the intelligent consumer will weigh it appropriately.
This is again a misrepresentation of my stance.. you are disagreeing with somthing I never said.
My criteria is **not** "devoid of any kind of bias".. the criteria is that bias is not baked in as a feature.. that a reasonable attempt is made to eliminate and reduce bias, NOT to intentionally add bias as a feature.
I hope you can see how these are two wildly different things.
@freemo @futurebird @andyhilmer I think that "banned" is the wrong term to uses in most school districts. They simply lack the capacity to teach advanced math, including Calculus, even if they thought it was important and wanted to do so. Starting with early grades, they think of math as a series of drills to be memorized. Who would teach the needed abstract reasoning concepts?
It is the lefty liberal districts, that do have some math capable teachers who do actually ban access to higher level math. They do so because they are worried about "gaps", the early sorting of students into high and low math tracks, a practice that disproportionately disadvantaged Black and Latino students and made it harder for them to access advanced courses down the line. If you prohibit Algebra until 9th grade, some students are either getting outside supplementation, or they are being slowed down. Opportunities to burst forward are also not accessible. https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/san-francisco-insisted-on-algebra-in-9th-grade-did-it-improve-equity/2023/03
Of course the issue isn't just school sorting, it is social and educational privilege that enables some families to provide their offspring with enriched environments, starting at the preschool level.
It is hard to create catch up opportunities in public schools, especially when so many elementary school teachers have week abstract learning/math skills themselves.
And we are a far cry from being a society where most adults understand at least the basic concepts of rate of change or approaching a limit. People don't understand that Calculus might actually have some relevance.
> If you exhale a sufficient amount of air you can actually sit comfortably on the bottom of the pool without floating upwards.
this is not a universal truth.. depends on your body composition. If i exhale all my weight I will still have quite a few KG of positive boyancy.
> It's not a joke. I don't refer to drowning. It's just that the oxygen is in the blood, etc., not in extraneous reservoirs, making me heavy enough to sink.
It is because you dont have a giant bubble sitting in your lungs making you float yea.
> I think my trick uses the same basis as what the video explained.
We may be thinking of different videos then. In the video I watched the people who held their breath had a lung full of air, they didnt exhale. The guy did sit ont he bottom of the water despite having a lung full of air, but that is likely because he was either fairly muscular or had weights on.
@freemo I do…I am teasing 😂
We have a history going back to when he and his (presumed) sock puppet accounts lead the #HeroesResist community on mstdn.social and they were borderline manipulating the trending hashtags on the corner of the #Fediverse. Not a fan, but I’m glad he has his own instance now for that community.
