Text-only version of PDF talk and slides about internet... called The Net beyond the Web (slides) by Amin Bandali
I think this PDF was supposed to have images but maybe my particular reader couldn't render the PDF, but means I got the text version so even though I could try another viewer I just wanted to paste the talks slide and output as it's interest and you can test out the PDF yourself !(each line break . paragraph is a new slide)
Enjoy!

goal: share some thoughts, spark discussion
net ?= web
[inter]net: interconnected network of networks
where
the networks and the devices comprising them
use tcp/ip to communicate with each other
web: is part of the internet
consists of websites, like
https://www.gnu.org
which consist of webpages, like
https://www.gnu.org/gnu/about-gnu.html
which are written in html
html + css
... + javascript
web initially a method/protocol for sharing
documents, information, media, ...
example: the first website (still accessible):
http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
aside: shout out and thanks to
wayback machine - https://web.archive.org
early on:
small websites consisting entirely of text
and a bit later images/photos as well

javascript
[before] javascript:
webpages were fully static
this was not desired by web developers
netscape decided to add a scripting language
to their web browser, netscape navigator
netscape hired Brendan Eich to embed the
scheme language into their browser
yay!!
right?
... right??
nestscape collaborated with sun microsystems
to embed java into their browser
netscape management decided the new scripting
language must have a syntax similar to java
rather than scheme
Eich designed and implemented javascript in 10 days

why are we okay with this, when we know we can do better?

handle distributing of software to their users
we need similar control/trust/consent in the browser
and a shift in the norms and status quo among web developers
for instance by creating and documenting publicly-accessible

what about other protocols?
gopher, gemini, spartan, ...
http(s)
one idea:
plain text + some rules + convenience (via extension)
some *bold* text, _emphasized_ text,
a dashed title
--------------
[ image-filename.png ]
and a simple caption
a link to the <contact.txt> page
> a tiny block of
> quoted text
(message "and a 4-space indented code block")

(eqn "sqrt(b^2-4ac)")
(eqn
(sqrt (- (expt b 2) (* 4 a c))))
\sqrt{b^2-4ac}
do we want a programming language?
maybe, maybe not. if we do,
1. be used only when really needed
2. code blocks be clearly & freely licensed
3. any code executed only with user's consent,
potentially along with a permission system
that gives the user fine control over what
functions can execute for each site
user should have ultimate control
over how documents look
http does not have to be the only transport
people have been thinking about or experimenting
with other transport methods/protocols

what to do? how to help?
as a user:
- use freedom- and privacy-enhancing
browser extensions such as:
gnu.org/s/librejs, jshelter.org,
haketilo, and ublock origin
(see "taking back the web with haketilo"
by Nicholas and Wojciech for a list of
even more such extensions)
- say no to nonfree javascript
"saying no even once helps"
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/saying-no-even-once.html
- check out and participate in
small web or small net initiatives,
as well as tilde or pubnix communities
like tilde.team and sdf.org
as a developer:
- release and label your javascript as free software
https://www.gnu.org/software/librejs/free-your-javascript.html
- check out protocols like gopher and gemini,
see what they have to offer, and think about
what an http-based approach could look like
- contribute:
- other browsers like luakit, netsurf, and visurf
- help maintain liberated and privacy-enhanced
versions of firefox like gnu icecat and abrowser
- don't use javascript unless you really need to.
when you do, please license it freely, and follow
principles like 'progressive enhancement' to make
sure your website works without javascript and css
if you happen to work on either side of the
current web browser duopoly, or work on web
standards, please consider:
do we really *need* all the new complexity?
12 years ago, mozilla removed support for
gopher on the grounds of reducing complexity
and attack vectors. do the current web and
its browsers resemble anything but complexity?
firefox and chromium are now each more than
30 million lines of code, on the same order
of magnitude and in fact currently larger than
the kernel linux. new code and complexity
keeps being added, while at the same time,
user freedom, control, and often privacy seem
to be gradually lessened and eroded.
the net I'd like to see beyond the current web
1. does not facilitate tracking users;
2. has freedom, control, and consent built in; and
3. is in many ways simpler, has a reasonable and
finite scope, and has several server and client
implementations.
thanks!

Links with No Adverts + No Tracking from Google...
@kreyren Invidious links also does the auto-thumbnail reation for any link pasted in the box... so instead of pasting YouTube links please use the same video ID in the Invidious link.
The Invidious URL shows on Mastodon the same as it did with YouTube links :)
If I remember right you're not-so-hot for YouTube BUT WERE USING YT links (for like a lot of things) and at the time it was because of the embedded auto-thumbnails picture mostly... or some other excuse ;)
(was the wrong priority for me)
But now Invidious does it will you ignore this poke and just consider making ALL YouTube links as Invidious instead? Thanks and example (same video ID below)

Private blogs are a better for privacy in many ways than massive public social internet....
5mins Lightning talk by Matthew Wise (mic is terrible but audio clips / notes below are good reminders / my take away points)
******************
My notes
- Facebook does a 100 unwanted or bad things measurably * at the same time as 'just' sending messages * @40secs
- FB are not optimising for accurate reality but what incites an emotional reaction and to keep you scrolling (engaged as engagement / tied up continuously)
How they can get you to stay on Facebook... (misleading focus, making people dumber / hedonistic as result?)
(- I Didn't like the stat $60 as maybe it's not clear or pulled from average... or I just don't know why I have feelings about any stats now and feel maths without knowing how maths was done just abusive stats and abused maths as it misrepresents well many things to falsely present a 'measurable' number!)
- Making things for friends but not always public... something within family? (private Mastodon?)
(Maybe maintenance issues with self-hosting or people don't want control so they give it to US BigTech to deal with even if abused?)
- Not complaining about Facebook or dragnet surveillance, Just simply doing things differently...
- Solution using RSS / Atom of WebFeeds- aggregating from websites so you can see them in central locations
(simple and robust existing thing / everything uses it already / Aaron Schwartz etc).
https://havenweb.org/screenshots.html
- Private blog + Feed reader = most of Facebook - is simply said and as equation clear (Haven software link above makes it clearer).
So basically like Mastodon maybe though more for own server blogging (guess it's micro-blogging here with a few people expanding that)
Basically like some of the 'newer' takes of what is usually bashing or emotional. Good to hear it again too a bit differently or even as reminder.
Philosophy people know is a threat or mixed bag, and that's why they have avoided it or not been willign to run the distance as it involves the re-evaluation of everything...
@ArrestJK I agree but at the same time many know and see it as a high level threat or danger to their structure or program. Basically people know and have avoided, personally or by design leaned it toward other things (edited those discussion out, only left what is less meaningful or less 'harmful' in this way).
So a big part of the population, not just the ones running things, but parents and upwards, in schools or anyone with position or profession- I think they know exactly how dangerous and mixed it is talking about philosophy, and the sovereign or unique perspective nobody can take away from someone (big threat to any other program). So if it's true as I see it, by-passing or stopping to talk about it has been by design agreed or unsaid with people knowing they don't have the answers or want them or the will to uphold it (and thus change a perfectionist/robotic/fascist system" (excuse my bad words and choose anything kind of binary). If what we think and want is in it's own realm / our own mind / a different law of physics / a kind of ethereal shared existence or whatever, then basically all of that can be summarised as a threat!
By design (especially when they realised students are more clever than adults) they would have had to deal with this to keep order / hierarchy / their pride / honour / own focuses or even keep their position! Every parent knows this I think (or every parent I've questioned at least)
It would be endless / exhausting / unsupported by system so 'for benefit of kids' it's avoided or fear or being different / black sheep.
I'm slightly also thinking of things like money also where the philosophy is heavily assumed even if not said and people have made it up almost from inferences (like pride in working, owing people for life, not paying it forward for free) and instead suffered from hunters / group preying on individuals from banks or creation of debt itself etc (and silly people that don't get it)... that it's immoral basically lol... but in the same way ignored to our own detriment (this example shows how bad we can be at not teach what it actually is or is doing (emptying our energy and out pockets and planet into other people's and cheating us at the threat to our own life, "money or you life" kind of this as before ) but people instead complain lots and don't want to talk philosophy or even about anything more than 5mins!.... but then end up complaining and getting stimulated about the next scandal or how it's cheating people numerically. A decent logical moral service just doesn't exist and so I see this as part of it or good example! I do fear I've mixed things but to summary money does mix things well to almost numb the brain or render pulling any string making it worse - so measurably we are beter without it or just less but we probably need to reset or move it on from the hands that have no idea OR know very well what they do and don't even talk about it...
"Just get a job, don't worry about those things" those kinds of remarks... many awkward parent have mark my card even with my reminder "it's for the children right?" )
So by a few measures and assuming somewhat freedom is at the heart of this IS CONSISTENTLY NOT THE PLAN... :) (said or unsaid) ...it's often known and just been edited out or "it's not our job" - like someone has to give you a job first to do it or that freedom someone is going to pay for...
It's measurably never paid for and always some bigger scam at hand... so inversely opposite (what is still left in has been sterilised by "well-to-do people" as Bertrand Russell says at @6.50 who have changed over time but ignorance or avoidance consistent (no real change or challenge or intention)
The question of money is close to me and it's similar to a uneducated philosophy or what has just been left out or replaced artificially or just not self-cultivated and tested...
and from that life and children are born... A bit tangential but the "To be or not to be" for me comes back to this "To exist or not to exist" in this kind of start point today or level of understanding... "To really live or not to demote living (and just follow)"... ?
Anything welcome in reply or from yourself. Thanks

@2ck I guess traditionally or primitively "HIGH" goes along with thinking "FASTER" or "better cooked" etc rather than actual ways and wave power.
Also people don't read much the manual when opening new microwave... so this combination...
Although I do know how "HIGH" can mean different things AND real the manual... still was funny when my friend told me there was lighting happening while I was reheating my spaghetti...
in a metal pot....
Totally forgot... and after it felt like I had survived something after that... and yeah the pot was ok and spaghetti not bad.... had to put it in for another go minus metal pot :]
Mastodon's magic box (top left of desktop) interface solves most of the answers to "how to follow or how to comment on videos" from Mastodon to different compatible platforms:
Answer / hint / general rule if not sure is:
JUST PASTE ANY PEERTUBE CHANNEL LINK OR USER URL in the TOP LEFT MASTODON BOX !
any video / channel = url / user link etc.... and see what happens.
Many urls just work like magic... to show the options you need.
From this you can reply to videos / add comments! / follow channel or user/author)
Just try pasting everything into the mastodon box - that box is near universal !
Boom! Boost!

Some quotes:
" Companies will tell us “we’re a family!” and encourage us to put the company before the personal.
Companies benefit when employees put the job first. Sometimes this is healthy – a sort of “we’re stronger together” vibe – but sometimes it’s not.
...
I think many people... underestimate just how ruthless and sociopathic our late-stage Capitalist working conditions really are. (I’m speaking mostly about the US here; that’s what I know.)
...There are very few mechanisms for dealing with bad workplaces.
...There are very rarely consequences for poor behavior; anything from run-of-the-mill bad management to harassment and abuse often goes unchecked. "

Love this kind of stuff. The atmospheric detail and style help...
I'm personally looking for 1 picture to explain key things (in anything) so if you have let me know!
Even info steps for things in one picture (or at least steps for parts of a problem) like wikihow.com or https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Open-formats.jpg
Anyone passing by good steps keep this post bookmarked (click bookmark which is almost the last one)
Being tired and constantly working (and not knowing how to take breaks) causes people to get in to shorter loops or a kind of selfishness from being overloaded... which is hard to get out of, or make sense from where problems come from (just the same loops usually from being overloaded / not caring for everything or low priority which then becomes high priority and then emergency)... and during this evolution of neglect, or continual oversight, communications and feelings get more and more tested as time and work keeps piling up... becoming more personal and aggressive.
This was specifically obvious when someone today doing 4 things at a time kept needed to be reminded about something simple but each time but time-slicing too much was taking their attention and making it hard to remember the order or the previous messages and statuses which all change again as time goes on (bewarre)
Leaving things makes it more more personal/emotional to you and others which takes other people's energy too instead of making it really as much as possible 1 by 1 things and measuring how good you can go ad-hoc as that is also needed and according to mood. But if you're too busy time-slicing this is like a processor doing very little of everything or have too much of the same monotonous work and not having any culture / not growing much else in life (which is a problem itself)
Simplified, imagine a put of water and short pots you constantly have to fetch and empty, fetch and empty.
But even with big pots you might leave it too long and let things overflow while your away thinking you pot is big (often happens when people are cooking with wrong pot or turning heat up to maximum instead of slow and safe)
So the workers get the stress or authoritarian attitude when bosses or managers to be reminded more, which only tests their relationships, because generally the problems is that overloading of work (or aiming for perfect or 'maximum efficiency' inside normal/imperfect people.
Overloading on life encroaches into all life... and you can see how this works on a civilisation if they are too busy doing any government's prescribed work instead of all the other parts of culture (which measurably is not supported or paid for by gov).
Try do a bit less (because even then that might me more than you can chew).
Will review this later but just as a note / observation and yeah slight computer reference about overdoing the time-slicing (though some people / cpu can do it but it's good to call out on those that can't because they sometimes loose control of themselves!). Humans are a good check on each other if it can be in a good way and helping while maintaining you're own balance in helping.
Lots of points I'll clear up one day or in conversation.
http://freeschool.0id.org/?s=audio
Converting "feelings" is an under-estimated as a way of doing things.
As if it were a supernatural material we are not utilising it and helping others release our own potential.
Which also I think is deliberately limited as this is one of the true essence and potentials- how we feel, what we want to do and what it means to us individually and in common.
Measurable releasing each other 's potential can help us achieving almost anything we want from 1to1 to 1toMany... then ManytoMany.
#feelings = #energy / #motivation = power
It's about changing / opening our minds...
I give people time and I thnk that's the difference to others online who really don't have or give time and give up on people really easy... (don't mean to be competitive, no put-downs, just I more dedicate time to others and weave us together).
So you don't even have to read any of this because EVERYTHING needs time + communication and without that a lot is broken and even less human even if it's for good...
Just follow and put notifications on to TEST MY FEED.... the rest below is just over-info for most poeple.

Fan of Fediverse!
Quick Look - peace-loving work / services:
█ Mini-Podcast (few mins each, examples below)
█ Picture remixes / video remixes
█ Lessons without being too 'teacher' about it. Teacher has teeth for eliminating doubt.
█ Food for thought as gentle soul also.
█ Unique ideas - often impossible for professionals (they are burdened by financial repsonsibility and therefore associational risk in saying things). I'm more diverse and occasionally direct (with respect, though I don't shy away from reminding people).
█ Not too embarrassing to say "I don't know" but can still chase things.
█ More responsive than casual users usually because people think having 'job' is enough in life. I say it's not! And even faimily is of no use if it's only getting worse (in everything!).

I help people create audio / edit educational audio / podcast / music / visual short videos / transcript text
+ I like to add a bit humour while being quite strict in my own politics (opinions) but open / inviting for others to tell me what I should do if they can explain more than just a short comment (I don't mind it's healthy for me at least if you have logic and can stand yourself explaining).
FreeSchool is about Learning towards Freedom (which is about Uniting everyone slowly, even "1 by 1"... Easy with The Fediverse!
Not virtue signalling here only, but practise of EVERYTHING as we go. Judged by getting in contact (many have) and having courage to communicate (or seeking it from others is ok, EVERYONE needs a bit of courage or hand-holding to make big personal changes). Who else is there for example if family doesn't understand?
Learning and watching can be good and staying out of people's way, BUT better is doing something every day and helping each other with some tough decisions / lessons... and then being bold enough to do them. 1... 2... 3 that is all that's needed.
Let my posts do most of the talking.
Put me on notification (click bell that appears after follow ia accepted) and if it's not interesting switch off after and tick me off the list of potential people to follow daily!

I'm usually impressed with my media gallery as I work on posts a lot usually or hit the "Aha!" moments and capture it (other people may forget it for years, not me!).
Freedom is about *making it work together* better like using #Mastodon on the #Fediverse daily for better platforms with more #bestpractices and 'best' people to help us which I kind of collect here and
when it's #1 comment!
I am measurably better because I reply and stick to everything to the end(!)
No cancelling friendship suddenly without saying why or being moody!
Freedom is to Learn, Respect and Love eventually and ️to Unite!
Practically it's also like Tetris - add yourself to the puzzle and watch it all happen...
█▬▄▀ ╚ ╦ ╝╠╧
talk more on Mastodon and the Fediverse and puzzle it all out using better ways to less use the other bad commercial / extractive people...
L£$$ of the less caring people like the ggl's / ytb / gmail / mainstream communication points etc who are offering lots of space 'free' and it's not free of peace there.
We GIVE to real people (TIME NOT JUST MONEY).
There's no buy-in solution - we have to make it with selotape or whatever we have - it's not shameful to bring whatever you have.
FreeSchool is terminology put together from many good things from past (coined in 1950's/60's. I / we become it eventually through being.
It's a movement for Freedom via Learning it all (learning self included and less active stuff) and doing the learning *together* --> https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeschool.
I encourage you warmly to participate with me as a I have time and then spiral out naturally to others (we are part of humanity and so naturally a sort of evangelism or ecological pyramid of life as we choose to spread lesser suffering while accepting consuming is part of it).
Less-commercial in orientation (in everything) and happy to think / work for free.
Naturally you will hesitate if someone is sure of themself or ok standing on shoulders what we copy do the best from humbly but not too sterile either.
Based on just emotions ruins almost everything, which seems very common - very ungraceful - so don't disconnect... do it gracefully at least!
A "school" of thought is here you can interact / ask and make best together as free/low cost as possible.
Even a bad answer you can take best from (of course I won't know all your situation when I suggest something but I don't need to answer 100% - you also need to help me!).
Leave perfectionism, we are all imperfect humans! Let's do it... Choose something ANYTHING and keep the thoughts rolling together...!
