HOW METRICS / COUNTING NUMBERS / SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT FAIL HUMANS

(ALMOST HIDING DATA / PARTIALLY REVEALING)

YouTube views as an example here.

YouTube counts how many people viewed a video or is it just counting the video's visits to the page? It's maybe unclear so this is part of a problem / question

- did they actually watch any of the video?
- did they just open and close tab?
- was it most likely a fly-by / mistake?

These would all drastically discount the page visit or video watching number.

So to conclude the number is nice for a number count- but what it's counting (all the uses) IS NOT... showing for metrics to be worth you really need lots more metrics else it's misleading... (which opens up doors to manipulation / scams / misleading numbers)

SUMMARY
So imagine metrics were clearer and showed
- the visits where someone open closed within 30secs
- video watched %'s (like did they watch only from middle to end and not start?

Arguably this is more of a page hit counter* and while it might not suggest it's a 'video watched' counter you can see there is responsibility ON BOTH SIDES to consider what the conditions and cases to increment pages are -
- and could mean far less YouTube numbers from people clicking this video instead of that.. or looking for a particular version of a video for "Gangsta's Paradise" or anything with many versions- you might click all fo them and +1 many pages without actually watching !

So unless there is further clever metrics (perhaps even clever metrics for socially important data) then it's misleading and doesn't show if people stuck around more than 10seconds /
how long user watched for and what we as users could check to answer "how many people watched 80% consistently?")

Instead we just have numbers which almost hide these metrics and this is the danger if it's money, politics or anything measured but doesn't measure the cases or conditions (and even doesn't want to by those funneling stats deliberately only in some semi-transparent ways like this youtube example where 100% FOR SURE every video has a BIG dropout count but still counts as 'viewed' or 'seen' or 'watched' when it's TOTALLY NOT)

CONCLUSION
-Numbers are misleading and while it depends how serious you are it means metrics can be taken less seriously,
-Metrics often demands FULL ACCESS OR TRANSPARENCY or some infinite sub-measurements in order to be seen properly from different angles and filters (and which would probably defeat the whole reasoning why to measure). Even if YouTube was a bit clever and waiting to see if user was still watching after 30seconds then you get into "what constitutes watching properly a video, 50%, 80%, 100%?)
- For humans our brain sometimes does better to reason things ourselves so for YouTube video "who cares" if 20% of the video counter is NOT from proper views- but for life these numbers obviously count much more!

A combination is probably best but I feel it's way more manipulation by industry and bosses to look at numbers and not reality of sub cases and a kind of fascism to not care or only care for number / order / standards / progress etc.

Technical Reasons:
- save bandwidth
- less disposable bits (when you close bits disappear)
- save processing power / heat generation

WHY I SAY THIS?
The example video shows just a face who doesn't have much expression or animation so it makes sense after having a look initially to switch to audio or if your browser is slow with many videos open or buggy just reduce demand overall.

I know things can be wrapped inside a bad outer layer or the person has alterior motives (also happy to hear how) but the basic principles seem not horribly wrong or too misguided.

Audio I edited is ~30mins from original on page (~40mins) and I converted to mp3 because for some reason it was uploaded with a ~400mb wav file for the ~40mins! So this save space as-you-listen in that respect!

MAN-MADE IMBALANCE

(SO AN AUDIO SAYING FOR ME THAT EVEN IF HUMANS HAD A CHOICE, MOST WOULD PREFER TO MAINTAIN A DIVIDE OR SUBJECT OTHERS TO HEAVIER WORK)

Something I've experienced too working for people AND asked to pay rent AND FOOD and other things people had plenty of of.

For some psychological or semi-tragic reason (like a tragic Shakespearean play) this audio confirms the faults of human psyche and never being satisfied + always need to feel up by pushing others down or never feeling like other deserve it more than themselves... (so jealousy and envy as 2 main words?)

Here's what's said in the audio:

SUB-SPECIES OF PEOPLE (BRAVE AND MUCH-LESS BRAVE)

To be honest (and think about this) many people don't ask questions themselves as they are not willing to do much about it -
they are literally nice even great people but it would only make them feel down (not even in the positive sense after this cycle of feelings to do something about it).

They literally wouldn't fight for 'it' and actually kinda-sorta might pay more or let themselves be scammed more than debate authority or challenge anything.

They pre-chose this somewhat although their limits may vary- still they are not brave- at all.

I'd like say and show here (without putting 'them' or anyone down) that there is also a sub-species of people that cannot or will not fight or fall far below the threshold to do cognitive fighting. So almost as a different animal within human, they totally can't do it or were not born + didn't learn + taught badly + fear themselves too much etc...

So letting go if perhaps what happens when looking into those people for help- they are actually a bit of a liability and/or need to find in themselves often by themselves the answers (if you give it it's bad <- this is one of the bad types logic I mean or is very hit and miss to get someone to have the will or learn different).

I'd like to hear what you think

Could even consider it saving more time when it's this obvious people don't have the teeth even to stop the bullying in their own job or stealing. We just have to find others probably as they can't put themselves as the stress point and deal with it.

Often from the way they speak or reply one can see person is weak- which is perfectly human.

FURTHER COMMENTS:
IF people don't practice discourse with strangers (on a topic or freeform) then basically they often get don't get the right idea (even if they might agree they be wrong)

This audio is great as someone else said it (while in conversation with someone else) and it's a lot more credible as example...

I feel it's hopeless to try convince people who don't want to talk audibly and instead 'hide' or stay defensively behind computer text...

I know there is more reason and psychology to why some people don't audio chat about something they care about but I can say now is more the time than later - to care more than text people and expect understanding / progress !

May any 'revolution' not be just text!

LIFE BALANCING

Reaching an understanding is different from "meeting half way"

Some people don't mind doing or giving more, or they are simply more able (abilities are different or feelings can be more or less etc)

It's usually other standard like money or numbers that force things when really if someone has many apples or has the feeling to give then people should not get in the way or have some way to balance it (I can also imagine people working too much or giving too many apples but I think overall it's a hindrance to have everything as number and not the more human inaccuracies that can be balanced / discussed some other way)

Taken me 10's of years to find that out and see the Bank as the bad / uncaring root of all life!

MY TAKE ON TOPIC:
Any company we work for has a loan and is just an in between for the same relationship (to pay back %).

Working to pay banks who charge for loans / mortgages etc means they are the root of life AND they are creating more debt every time there is more lending
(and the % or total gets bigger all the time it's unpaid).

Greed and Banks are a big problem. V£RY BIG.
