Another way to think about is in terms of . We have lost up to 90% of in many of our areas. These few remnant wetlands are therefore all the more precious because they are all we have left, even if they’re not pristine.

When we talk about , it’s important to understand that is the product of the AND the number of people who from the function. So, if a wetland slows down the flow of runoff, that’s a function, but if it does that upstream of your house during a major storm, THAT’S when it has value. Sure being near so many ppl causes stress and effects their integrity, but it also means they benefit A LOT of people. More people visit them, learn from them too!

Urban are unglamorous compared to these other , nearly pristine wetlands. They are usually full of and litter. They don’t have the same . They’re more often small and fragmented. But this doesn’t mean they’re not ! There is wildlife there, if you look.

In my research on , I’ve been to some spectacular, internationally important places. Canoed the turquoise waters of the Columbia Wetlands, hiked to nestled in mountain valleys of the upper Bow River clamboured over dunes to in the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve. My ❤️🔥in these wild places but more and more I’m thinking of wetlands. Why? A short 🧵🪡

I just listened to Markham Council’s meeting about Bill 23. Sobering. Markham staff estimate that Markham taxes will have to rise by 80% to pay for all the new infrastructure if Bill 23 is implemented.

Over 20 yrs ago, using an exponential decay model, we showed that North American freshwater animals were disappearing 5 times faster than land animals & 3 times faster than coastal marine mammals. We found that North American freshwater ecosystems are losing species at a rate comparable to tropical rainforests (redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/riccia). This received much media attention at the time. The alarm was rung many times since. Yet #freshwater ecosystems are rarely the focus of #conservation campaigns.

Great idea!

In general I am interested in macroecological patterns of biological invasions and the drivers that govern these patterns in space and time.

Mainly working with plants from the #GloNAF database but also other groups are fine.

Lately, I also work on future scenarios of biological invasions in the #AlienScenarios project.

And I also contribute to the @ipbes invasive alien species assessment which will hopefully be adopted next year.

A new report from Stanford argues for changing how we teach science in the face of rampant disinformation. “…the goal of science education must be to make “competent outsiders” of all students.”

Focus should be on how to determine whether a source is credible.

One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 143 years!

In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to find out how long seeds could remain viable underground. So he buried bottles with different kinds of seeds in a secret spot somewhere on the Michigan State University campus, knowing the experiment might outlive him.

It did! Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists still dig up the bottles and seeds continue to germinate 🌱 nytimes.com/2021/04/21/science #science
