Good evening all, #tuesday is coming to an end. I'm going to close the day with an Eastern #Meadowlark mucking about for a snack on a nice #winter day. Enjoy the rest of your day:)

rtutor.ai/ <-- very fun to play with "generative stats", writing #R code through #GPT3 ... requires some knowledge of R and #statistics, but potentially great for people who use R every few months and then google for the commands and libaries again; thx @StevenXGe@twitter.com

R is now widely used in every branch of science. However, learning R can be stiff for students without prior exposure to programming and computing.

RTutor is an AI-enabled tool that can be used to learn R easily. In RTutor, you chat with RTutor to analyze data and perform visualization using R. RTutor uses a language model for understanding your requirement and writing the R script.

#introduction Hey y'all 👋 I'm currently a research assistant in the Hoban Conservation Lab at the Morton Arboretum. Researching how genetic markers impact ex situ conservation metrics/how genetics can inform conservation.

Constantly learning about #Linux and #R. Interested in all things conservation science, while also acknowledging that many solutions to the crises we face are not best addressed through scientific research.

Hello, Mastodon world!

I am a newbie here and looking for folks interested in #digitalepigraphy #Epigraphy #archaeology #ancienthistory #longduree #openscience #FAIRdata

I am a #postdoc at Aarhus University, Denmark & Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, working on ancient Greek and Latin inscriptions and the messages they convey about the ancient Mediterranean communities.

I work primarily in #R and believe in FAIR and Open Science. Find me on #github as @petrifiedvoices

Nice example of how you can use AI #chatgpt #gpt3 to generate #R code, I think a lot of easy/standard code will be written this way in the near future rtutor.ai/

“It's well-demonstrated that you can't build your way out of traffic congestion by building roads — the more you build, the more people drive. As the saying goes, building more lanes to address congestion is like loosening your belt to address obesity.”

I declare it is a crying shame that @TheTweetOfGod didn’t commit fully and become TheTootOfGod.

Having twin boy toddlers has done nothing to elevate my sense of humour.

A new study confirms what we have reported before: The rich are different from you and me; they emit way more carbon. The research out of the United Kingdom shows where they emit it—a lot of it comes from flying.

The study raises a lot of questions about where we have been putting our efforts in reducing emissions. While we are busy telling people to take shorter showers and turn down the thermostat, the study finds the rich drive excess energy.

Would a picture of a baby elephant in the water for the very first time bring you some extra cheer today?! Ta da. 🤗

Nice bit from #Wired on how bioplastics aren't a magic bullet to fix #plastic #pollution. I really think the main takeaway needs to be that consumption isn't free. As Sarah Frenkel lays out in her excellent book on plastics, plastics manufacturers have encouraged us to think of stuff as cheap and disposable for way too long now.

Today, we celebrate a historic agreement - we have agreed on a mission to protect nature by 2030.

I feel much more proud to know that we can build a better future. Now, it’s on all of us to implement.

Ok, #mosstodon, I took some pic of some of between-paver moss. One with my phone cam, one with a microscope attachment, same general location.

190 countries sign landmark agreement to protect nature in a bid to stop the alarming loss of biodiversity:

Among the 23 targets detailed in the United Nations agreement are a pledge to protect 30 percent of the planet’s oceans and land by 2030.

“We have 30 by 30. Six months ago, who would have thought we could 30 by 30 in Montreal? We have an agreement to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, to work on restoration, to reduce the use of pesticides. This is tremendous progress.”

New #paper by former #REU student Anna Paraskevopoulos, with Chris Catano: #Ant and #plant diversity respond differently to seed-based #prairie #restoration

Anna was interested in the Field of Dreams Hypothesis in restoration: if you build diverse plant communities, will animals also benefit?

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

Anna found that seeding more diverse seed mixes led to restorations with more plant diversity, but not more ant diversity

So, plant diversity didn't matter for ants? Not so fast!

Ant diversity was highest in locations with high plant richness (seeded + non-seeded species), when the veg was sparse and ground temps high

So plants and ants respond differently to plant-focused restoration efforts, but plants matter for the ants when we also pay attention to environmental factors

Great job Anna!

CBC: Biodiversity agreement to protect planet reached at UN conference in Montreal

The world sets goals and targets in Montreal. Will it be different this time, or just more empty goal-setting?

So it's #Day13, the final day of #COP15 - and of our #historicalecology series here. To return to the original Guardian article all this was in response to (adding here again for reference): this (monster rather than mini) thread has tried to put together evidence that the history of our relationship to nature has not been one of unilinear destruction; and that destruction is not "human nature".

How does this matter for #COP15, and beyond? Today it was great news that a (first!) Global Biodiversity Framework was forged. In the face of Sixth mass extinction, & with widespread rapid #capitolocence destruction, the protection of biodiverse forests, wildlife habitats & crucial ecosystems is hugely important - for example the Leuser Eco System in North Sumatra, or Okomu National Park in Nigeria. I'm myself involved in forest elephant protection here!
