My U Waterloo colleagues Michael Drescher and Luna Khirfan wrote a great article on #Ontario ‘s #Bill23. This bill - the More Homes Built Faster Act - is a real piece of Orwellian doublespeak. It will not help increase #affordablehousing and will lead to higher property taxes as it prevents municipalities from charging developers the fees that recoup costs of development! https://theconversation.com/ontarios-bill-23-proposes-more-homes-built-faster-but-this-comes-at-an-environmental-cost-194494
People of #ontario should be up in arms about this massive #taxpayer subsidy to already lucrative residential developments and extremely wealthy #developers. The #greenbelt sell-off is such obvious #corruption that this developer fee hand out is not getting much attention, but Guelph and Hamilton both already projected big property tax hikes in response to #Bill23 #onpoli
Today I’m remembering how hard we fought to protect #DuffinsCreek #CoastalMarsh on #LakeOntario.
I’m thinking about all the other #WorkhorseWetlands people take for granted in our urban and rural areas. They are working hard to purify #water and prevent #floods, but do we adequately value them?
Today, why not tidy up your local #wetland? Stop 🛑 that litter from becoming #Microplastics or harming #waterfowl. Bring some garbage bags and some friends and do a clean-up. It will feel amazing to actually make something better with your own hands.

the Association of #municipalities of #ontario (AMO) bluntly noted, this one piece of legislation “will enhance the profitability of the development industry at the expense of #taxpayers and the natural #environment.” #bill23 #bill39 #housing #housingaffordability
In its own analysis, the Association of #municipalities of #Ontario AMO warns that #Bill 23 will transfer up to $1 billion a year in costs from the private sector to #property #taxpayers “without any likelihood of improved #housing #affordability.”
Got to brag about my awesome students who took our field storage from this (top) to this (bottom) today! Field season is officially over for the #WaterlooWetlandLab in 2022!

NASA cancels greenhouse gas monitoring satellite due to cost
(AP) — NASA is canceling a planned satellite that was going to intensely monitor greenhouse gases over the Americas because it got too costly and complicated.
But the space agency said it will still be watching human-caused carbon pollution but in different ways

The irony inherent to many vaccines is that they are so effective some people have forgotten how bad the diseases they prevent are and have decided they don't need to be vaccinated against them.

@girls_can thank you! We are always looking for good podcasts for family car trips that are appealing to kids, but so much of what’s out there is insipid and down-talky.
In 2011 I happened across the story of the 1970s "Stop de Kindermoord" protests in the Netherlands. It was forgotten history. No-one had covered this subject in the English language in decades and it was rarely mentioned in Dutch.
Protests about the lack of safety for children on the streets became a highly effective movement which fed into the safe cycling infrastructure which we have today. Nowadays, most Dutch children cycle independently in relative safety, to school as well as to visit friends etc.
I'm happy to see that this subject has been picked up by many other people in the last ten years, though sadly it still hasn't been translated successfully into other countries' policies.

I'm working on a project for the Open Data Institute about #Responsible #Data #Stewardship. We're interested in the relationship to terminology such as '#DataEthics' (is there a difference?) and whether it's possible to develop #frameworks of #BestPractice.
I realise this is a key area of interest for people here and a live issue more generally. We'd be interested in people's thoughts / opinions and whether there are resources we should be aware of.
Here's more detail https://theodi.org/article/framework-for-responsible-data-stewardship/
A well named shagbark hickory, Carya ovata. Apparently, little bats will roost under the sections of bark.

this is the crux of the matter. Imagine the response by @lufappul@twitter.com, the community, donors, students, funding agencies, if these letters had been available on Feb 1. The decision to seal these letters was enormously consequential. It ruined people's lives. https://twitter.com/AlexUsherHESA/status/1597324065890762752

More evidence that “racial disparities” aren’t resolved by income gains. Making more money doesn’t save women & babies racialized as Black from unjust maternal/infant outcomes. Racism is facilitated by, operates through & exacerbates economic inequality but isn’t reducible to it. https://twitter.com/smilleralert/status/1597224865999704065

Oh and those people aren't faculty, staff or students....
