Humans' plastic trash in the ocean impacting the the petrels (a type of sea birds) of the Arctic, reports SR.
"Of the animals we have autopsied, it is now >90% that have plastics in their stomachs to such a degree that we believe it affects their nutritional intake", says Kim Holmén at the Norwegian Polar Institute on Svalbard, also saying that "they don't have to starve to death, but they have weaker bodies".
As to the source of the trash, Kim Holmén says "There is a current going up the coast of Norway [the Norwegian Current], which brings along pollution, what floats out of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, so Europe has a large responsibility for pollution in the sea in the Arctic".
I am embedding Critical Self-reflection in my updated #ConservationBiology class. I’m getting the students to keep a #Learning Dossier. I’m excited to encourage their development of metacognitive awareness, but a bit terrified how this will go. I’ll be posting prompts for them weekly here.

When the Oxford children's dictionary discarded dozens of nature-words—"dandelion," "fern," "starling"—as irrelevant to children's imagination and replaced them with words like "broadband" and "cut-and-paste," this inspired act of resistance was born: https://www.themarginalian.org/2019/06/17/the-lost-words-macfarlane-morris
I had heard of moths anti-predation tactics before, but hadn't realised that the use of ultrasound was as widespread as this paper shows. Excellent work by the authors 🦋 🔊 🦇

It's very disheartening to see that in the space of a month, the majority of images on my feed went from being described to having not even one sentence as a description. I started ID-ing on tumblr but #Mastodon really encouraged me to make it an actual habit.
Please, if you're able to, add descriptions to the pics you post.

It can’t be that everyone on #mastodon is still #masking. A lot of us are talking about how #CovidIsNotOver and how we are still masking, but surely a lot of people on here are not masking anymore?
I wonder what it’s like to read posts from those of us who are feeling free to be honest about how we feel about people not masking?
This is one of the only places where I talk about my real feelings about it. In my offline life it feels like I’m laying a guilt trip on people if I’m honest.
A decade ago, the oil-funded denial shops were making a big deal out of a “pause” in global warming, claiming “no significant warming since 1998.” I recall a lot of now-deleted blogs and media appearances from the usual suspects pushing the idea that warming was over.
It was a scam at the time, relying on statistical illiteracy, and it seems just silly in hindsight. This animated graph, from Wikipedia, shows why:
🚨 The final report of the Jan 6 Commission is OUT. I thank my colleagues who toiled these last two years to expose what happened. I look forward to digging into this and encourage all Americans to read the report and learn the truth of that dark day.

Now, by destroying so much of Ukraine's energy infrastructure in his invasion, Putin is using winter cold as an offensive weapon. #PutinWarCrimes

RT @KenRoth
As Russian forces under Putin's direction repeatedly attack Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, leaving Ukrainians in the cold in the midst of winter, we shouldn't let repetition inure us to the ugly reality: these are war crimes, not legitimate attacks. https://www.nytimes.com/202…

I totally understand and accept that many folks are willing to stick it out on the other place, despite the issues, for all sorts of reasons (including the disappointing amount of support they might be finding here for their communities). But at this point, personally I’m way more interested in building better communities here, and in other spaces with similar decentralized structures, then in enduring whatever havoc a hostile CEO decides to unleash at any moment.
We have a huge opportunity to reclaim online culture after 20 years of being shepherded into pens and jolted for our data. The gate is now open, and there are other, more promising options. We shouldn’t let this moment pass.

This was a fun one: I talked to demobilized guerillas who seek peace through brewing.
