RT @VSinkevicius: Plastic pollution can create problems we’ve never thought of:
Floods from blocking drainage systems or pollution in our soils.
Today, I am in Paris for the 2nd round of negotiations for a global 🌍 treaty against plastic pollution.
A game-changer for our future & economies! https://t.co/vo5QBciXm7

Please sign this petition support the #ontario #water #guardians to protect the #Greenbelt and keep the #Provincial Policy Statement. #environmental #conservation in Ontario is under attack when declines in #biodiversity and the impacts of #climatechange are being felt strongly across #Canada. #onpoli
Haven’t shared a lot of my #research on here yet, but #today I’m sharing an #openaccess paper I’m particularly #proud of 🥹. We used #expertopinion to develop a #cumulativeeffects model of the #multiplestressors affecting the #Arctic seabird Northern Fulmar. #fishing, #climatechange, #oil and #mining as well as resulting #boat traffic, #noise pollution, and #contaminants including #plastic are big contributors. @Brad_Rosenheim Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the cause of recent changes in methane concentration trends (e.g., wetlands). Here are some articles exploring possible sources/sinks: https://phys.org/news/2019-03-methane-atmosphere-surging-scientists.html & https://e360.yale.edu/features/methane_riddle_what_is_causing_the_rise_in_emissions & https://nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00312-2 & https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/150967/why-methane-surged-in-2020
I just learned about #what3words - a 3-metre square grid system that uses a 3 word address to easily and memorably #communicate precise location information globally. Very helpful for #fieldwork in remote locations and #safety plans. The words are random, but coincidentally, the door to the building where our #wetland #ecology lab is based is at ///indoor.roaming.aquatic !

We've known for a long time that climate change is increasing the area burned by wildfires across western North American. Now, a new study by @ucsusa shows that emissions from the world’s 88 largest fossil fuel companies and cement makers are responsible for 37% of the forest area burned in the western U.S. and Canada since 1986. https://e360.yale.edu/digest/fossil-fuel-companies-western-forest-fires
I had a nice week at #iaglr23 Hosting sessions on #microplastics and #wetlands as #keystone ecosystems. #toronto had great weather and the trees bloomed. The lieutenant governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell spoke, calling for increased support for #GreatLakes #science. We need a decadal science plan and we need the #usa and #canada to fund it.
This seems like an horrendous idea..
Doug Ford's #Ontario government wants to expand a licensing regime that allows residents to unleash dogs in an enclosed area to teach them how to hunt & kill captive coyotes, foxes & rabbits, This includes contests where dogs chase terrified coyotes around an enclosed pen.
Hunters say there is a growing demand for the dog sport, while animal advocates call it a cruel practice for the captive prey.

I was today years old when I learned that there may be a relationship between pollen counts and viral respiratory infections. Pollen impairs the immune response to viruses, and viruses may also be able to hitchhike deep into the airways on pollen grains. High pollen concentrations in March 2020 may have facilitated the spread of COVID during the first pandemic wave 🤧
@chrisjmcclure I shake my head as to why people think Alberta conservatives are fiscally responsible. We have a Heritage Trust Fund that when adjusted for inflation has not grown since 1979. Norway has 1 TRILLION in the bank after being in O & G for only 30 years compared to Alberta's 100! How is that fiscally prudent?
Gordon Lightfoot has died at the age of 84.
Calling him a Canadian icon or legend is an understatement.
He was one of our greatest singer-songwriters.
Born in Orillia, Ontario on Nov. 17, 1938, he had several #1 albums & songs.
He won 16 Junos.
RIP to a legend.
