More or less, let me clarify:

- I have installed a Write.freely instance in one of the systems here in the house, yes.
- There is NO cost for that other than your time to learn how to do it.
- My personal instance is NOT federated, although it could be if desired; it's one of the options in admin panel.

Why not publish directly from here?

- I could, and actually have spare full blown Servers on hand, Rackmounted Dell Powerservers.
- but that takes time, electricity, and they are production machines. Loud and not so nice to stay around. 😛
- it also bring bi security implications, because now you could become a target to the scum around the dark corners of the Net.

So it would need to be more than a Hobby reason. I think these systems might someday have use, if we have some kind of breakdown, I could become part of a local Library -- all kinds of content in the Net would vanish, and only local resources would be available.

I do read a lot of sci-fi, and Dystopic scenarios are possible.

I am thinking specifically of the "World Made by Hand" series of novels by James Howard Kunstler. His home and the novel's location is not too far from me -- I have travelled there by bicycle touring. 😺

People don't seem to know about it, I would promote locally, however there are too many freeloaders, who also then try and take credit for something I have told them about, I am not ego driven but it would be nice if they gave me some sort of credit.

I was asked months ago at a children's partnership meeting re websites, i sent the lady some info on where people could learn HTML/ CSS etc, I followed up, and they got one of their volunteers to do it, adj it was almost like , thank you now go away sort of attitude, people don't appreciate the amount of work that goes in to collating information for this.

Maybe I am just some mug that gets taken advantage of.

I generally share with people on a 1-2-1 with people who I know appreciate my suggestion to use something.

It comes from Git being a place you are used to; for me it's an Alien space, still. For most newer users as well.

Not really made for new blogger's use, although it might work. A niche solution perhaps.

If you are a Writer, your primary focus should be on that; on paper, on web, on ebook, but Content Production supercedes time learning publishing platforms.

We can help each other -- Ange's WF manual, the awesome MarkDown tutorial, an upcoming tool kit post for myself.

These can shorten the learning path to productive postign for new people, and we can see more people getting into it.

The number of accounts in WF instances is surprisingly low, considering how good the platform is, that it's free and easily accessed.

Time to change that!

Its worse, the install is non standard docker. It is done in such a way it cant exist with other docker installs on the same box so it absolutely must be run as the only service on its own box...

It really is horrible.

Funny thing is they insist they dont force people to install it that way (and banish them if they try to help people with alternative installs) because "we want you to be happy with your instance and we want it to just work"... well guess what, I'm not happy!

Good morning, good afternoon for both of you in Europe. I am really glad to see the ideas developing and us making use of resources that are here, at hand, and open to new suggestions and approaches.

It was amazing to see how Paul took to the Discourse forums -- a resource I cherish but it's not that used by the community here. That can change, and I sure hope it does. I will support and help in any way I can, as I see potential and love to explore myself.

We are always open to new ideas. The same way that Paul suggested and got a new Astronomy subforum, and I got a much needed Pinafore one, we could accept requests if people bring suggestions and take leadership in providing content and supporting one of those new areas.

Serendipity is wonderful, and I am so glad we crossed paths and started conversations -- not only us, but others will benefit from them.

Have worked in Education for many years, and now I do it in this new environment, under my own direction, learning every day.

Wonderful to see new ideas germinating. Thank you both.

@globcoco Pinafore is definitely a beautiful client. If it wasn't for the special ultra wide screen setup I have here, I would use it exclusively.

Easy -- the Subscribe feature will Allow you to :

* see any Public posts that user makes.
* NOT show any post with higher privacy level.
* So it's NOT invasive as some people argued when this came online.
* Allows you to see posts without connecting and notifying the user.

Sometimes useful, for people who have locked accounts, which require approval for Following. However -- they should know that PUBLIC means just that, and have no expectation of Privacy in anything sent Public.

Worth mentioning that these and other new features introduced in January 2020 have really nice Documentation -- produced by myself, modesty apart... 😉

@freemo I will invite a few people to here over the next week or so days and suggest they mention they also know me, @zleap that way we know who they are, will be selective at first, then friends can invite friends.

Hopefully there will be interest and people are open enough to come here and sign up.

I will however see if I can invite stem ambassadors here.

On a general advocacy level.

I have 2 blog posts planned tone covers what the fediverse is and the other covers alternatives to main stream social media, so it is a good opportunity to tie in invites to that.

I will make a point I am here, but try and direct people to the main mastodon instance so they can choose based on interest.

Also have an article in the draft stage too.

Hopefully things will start fitting together.

* Go into Settings and select one of the instances you have configured (hint -- double click on the Star in the right, and it's a ONE click switch, instantaneous).

* Done that? Now go into Settings --> General Settings.

* Slide to the Bottom of the page.

* and select one of the many Themes - Light or Dark, whichever you prefer.

* that theme becomes the Default for the current instance, and by selecting different ones, we can tell we are in one place or another.

There's lots of choices and the client is really a delight to use.
