Today I discovered that not only is July #Disability Pride Month but also that we have a flag. It is so well done and extremely meaningful. It was created by Ann Magill, a disabled writer.

I've been teaching my eight year old to #sew as part of her #HomeEducation and this is her latest creation. An envelope-fold cushion cover for her Nana. Please note her choice of fabric and the gradient poppers to match it. It's amazing to see how excited she gets about the fact that she can make something like this from scratch. Also amazing to see her realise that all of these skills are well within her grasp. A lovely way to spend a Sunday morning.

This frieze from Fulton County, Georgia shows "Medicine's battle with Death." Note the rod with two snakes. Many mistake it for the Rod of Asclepius (the traditional symbol of healing). However, this is the Caduceus, symbol of commerce. A common error in the USA.

The climate crisis, city biodiversity, ‘plant a tree’, ‘if the bees die, we die’ – all the consciousness-raising nudged me into a nervous attempt at a balcony garden. After a lifetime of believing I was incapable of keeping a houseplant alive, I was unprepared for the joy of waking up to discover that a plant has bloomed its first-ever flower while I was asleep. I am not even the tiniest bit embarrassed about how happy this has made me.

TIL about Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, who is an adamant freedom of speech and civil rights supporter. He spent big portion of his career to abolish slavery in Brazil. Despite huge popular support, he was coup'ed by the military and upper class elite right after abolishment of slavery.

One of the biggest habits that humanity has to kick is that of seeing a human-free space and assuming it’s worthless/empty unless we fill it up with something. It’s happening with plans for the ocean, deforestation for “development”, talk of delivery drones filling the future sky, cube sats that will hide the stars. This “space” is the planetary engine, and it’s incredibly valuable NOW. doing all sorts of things that keep us alive & enrich our lives. We should protect it. #ocean #climate #Earth
