@LouisIngenthron very good point, it is the overall environment they created.
@gpowerf It goes beyond the graphics in Starfield, though. For example, they made crushed styrofoam cups and disposable coffee lids into things that you could pick up and clutter your inventory with. Why?!?
Another #gaming toot about #game #graphics. Having played #Starfield and been really surprised at how much stuff there is in every room and ultimately grown bored I’m here to say that graphics details not only don’t matter but can make games worse.
Back in the day, a game like Shenmue didn’t look real at all, not every location was totally full of stuff, but it did feel like most things that were there did in some way contribute to the game in some way. With a game that’s as detailed graphically as Starfield it just feels like a lot of stuff is just there, like real life, just life crap everywhere. This makes the world less memorable, less unique, and more like reality.
But why is this a problem? Well, for one thing, it can make the game less immersive and engaging. When everything looks realistic and cluttered, it can be hard to tell what is important and what is not. It can also make the game more tedious and frustrating, as you have to search through piles of junk to find what you need or want. And it can also make the game less creative and expressive, as you have less room to imagine and interpret things in your own way.
Some might argue that graphics details are essential for creating a believable and immersive world, and that they enhance the gameplay by adding realism and variety. But I disagree. I think graphics details should serve the gameplay, not overshadow it. They should create a distinctive and consistent aesthetic that matches the tone and theme of the game, not just mimic reality for the sake of it. They should also be balanced with other aspects of the game, such as gameplay mechanics, story, music, and sound.
For example, look at older games. They have simple graphics, but they are effective and memorable. The graphics complement the gameplay, not compete with it.
So what I am saying is; I think graphics details are overrated and can make games worse if they are not done well. That's a hill I'm willing to die on too ;)
@elsantonegro I hope his pet squirrel runs across the border and joins him :)
@nixCraft a lot could go wrong. But also it's very exciting!

@wsslmn @arstechnica I have a sled that I pull for that :)
@MissingThePt Lorem nunc non opus est ut de Imperio Romano cogitemus. Antoninus Pius nos dirigit, nos viri sumus, nos fortes sumus, pro viribus valemus.
@arstechnica the cargo e-bikes do seem hugely useful! The ability to do a basic, local shopping trip without a car in anything but deep winter is great. It's a pickup bike :)
One advantage of the Welsh 20 MPH speed limit is that lots of people have been saying they won't go on holidays to #Wales anymore.
This might be a loss for Wales regarding income, but a big win for holidaymakers who keep going to Wales. Empty campsites, empty beaches, and less traffic don't sound too bad.
Russell Brand
The Russell Brand business stirs up a memory of a Google sponsored theatre competition from a few years back. The brief was to fund theatre experiences that were modern and unique. Roguegunners submitted an idea for what was effectively a choose your own story theatre piece where the story would change depending on live votes. The eventual winner of the contest was Brand who just basically did his standup act.
@jonn_blanchard it's hard for people outside the UK (where he really isn't well known at all) to understand that Brand's 5 minutes of fame burned with HUGE intensity, for a while he was everywhere here.
@memeinmymastodon I'm so sad that I was debating internally if the original photo was of a 1968–1974 Chevy Nova, or 72-ish Chevelle. Then I concluded that the windshield wiper means it is probably the Nova! I felt proud till I realized how geeky all this was.
@hersheyfan ooooh very cool! I've been tempted by one of these :) but honestly my 2 mechanical keyboards are just fine and I'm struggling to justify the expense.
@richardknott in countries where 14-year-olds can drive this, it makes perfect sense! Especially at the affordable lease price. If it was possible here for my 14-year-old son to drive this I'd get it for him, the freedom and mobility that he would get over a bicycle is huge.
I can really really see the point of this little quad in some places, if the regulations match the product this is perfect.
@AnnieRat1 good luck fixing it 🤞
My daily driver #Atari2600 (ok, it's a #Sears #TeleGames, same difference 😄) has started flashing when the fire button is pressed. HEX chip on order, so hoping it's this:

This is my fun social media account, I will post a lot of video game stuff (mostly old or cloud gaming) and some work stuff.
If I post an image with no Alt text it is because the image is just there for decoration and doesn't provide any extra meaning to the toot.
