Sometimes I think we have overthought why people use/used social media. More than half the time, I just wanna pull down with my thumb and see something unexpected or interesting or that I want to respond to. For all its cultural importance, I think Twitter’s popularity (among a certain set of people) was mostly about being a really good place to swipe down your thumb. Aaannddd I kind of can’t believe how quickly Mastodon is serving that same purpose for me … and actually more interesting?

Several people that I talked to in the last few days about the #Twittermigration including @cfiesler mentioned @doctorow's point about how social media companies essentially hold us hostage through our social networks:
"The problem with social media is that they used our presence as bait to lure in our friends and vice-versa and now they won’t let us go without extracting as high a price as possible for our disloyalty." The amount of misinformation being spread this evening about the US elections on Twitter is astounding.

It shows how important it is to offer solutions for decentralization in regards to moderation. #ElectionDay

What I am appreciating here on #Mastodon is, not only welcoming old friends, but following new ones. Long standing Mastodonians with interesting minds and lives. The cooperative model is brilliant. I have spent part of my academic career studying co-ownership and mutuality. #Mastodon is an exemplar of the #NewEconomy. Finally, it is just refreshing to show a little more of oneself. To share hobbies & interests beyond the political struggle.

Are there any tags that the retro gaming community are using for Mastodon? Trying to bulk up the ol' follow list to fill my feeds up with lovely pixels on crts and pick-up posts - make it feel even more like home.
