⚠️ Confirmed: Traffic data show mobile internet access has been suspended in #Senegal. The shutdown follows the arrest of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, and is the latest in a series of mass-censorship measures imposed by the government.

@chaser To be fair the house is pretty tiny and had no walls. It was just a glorified climbing frame, so, maybe that's the house of the future.

Threads, Twitter, and Bluesky: Our billionaire is better than your billionaire.

Mastodon: You actually don't need a billionaire at all.

Threads, Twitter, and Bluesky: Hold on, we have to ask our billionaire if that's true.

@mjdxp I once read a story, that may be an urban legend, about a guy who was live streaming himself opening a game that seemed heavier than usual, he found baggies with what looked like drugs inside.

A hint for new users, in case you were wondering how to reach more people here. See, on 𝕏 the algorithm "rewards" your posts by keeping you a certain loop of negativity (go ahead, try to convince me that I'm wrong) which drives engagement. It works in tandem with dopamine and generally it's not that hard to grow your audience fast. Next thing you know you're taking time off because you can't handle it.

On Mastodon real people reward your posts with boosts. So go ahead and write. We got you.

People keep posting screenshots of this article without context, so here’s the whole article. This sort of adaptation happens naturally when people move, you adapt to new hotter weather or new colder weather.

@darth it is just full of formulaic posts. Post after post of the same stuff, console war, or pictures of controllers asking when you started gaming, asking “what did you play today?”, etc… the algorithm encourages people to do the same thing over and over as this posts are proven to maximise engagement.

Basically it’s a place full of people behaving like bots.

Reading through now.

In case I forget (I always forget):

"building cultural norms into the tooling is much more effective and less alienating than chiding"

One of the best encapsulations of this idea, born of the challenges of managing the StackOverflow community norms (which tend towards scolding like lava), is Jeff Atwood's "Just In Time" Theory of User Behaviour:

I return to this a lot - it's useful.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

@carnage4life the crazier thing is that they don’t fake it and jeopardise their health like that. Plenty of YouTube Mukbangers have been found to spit out food, but faking alcohol is so so so simple! They would never get caught by the audience.

Seen one of these posted without credit, so sharing some more here because they are amazing and I'd buy every single one of them if they existed.
