On a whim, I dug out the old IBM Thinkpad T40.

It actually fires up and boots (windows xp). Don’t talk to the home wifi, as wifi standards have moved on somewhat.

Seems I had a dual boot confit on this, so now trying to boot ubuntu 7.

@krafty it depends what you are used to 😄 roads are bigger here than in the UK where I normally drive, and I drive a pickup there so I’m used to larger cars and tiny roads.

@darth don’t worry, you aren’t missing anything. I have a Series S and it performs super well for the cost, but PC Game Pass does everything the Xbox does anyway.

You know what? I actually really enjoy driving in the Philippines. I’ve driven plenty over the last week or so in both a Fortuner (love that SUV!!!!) and a little Hyundai Accent (sorry don’t love that so much) and it’s pretty chill and relaxed despite what people tell you. I’ve driven here before but this time around I put did way more Kms and I love it.

Seeing as I just shared this with someone considering buying from Japan for the first time, here’s my little guide based on my experience with buying retro stuff using proxy services re-enthused.com/information/bu

@richardtroupe I miss the days when things worked without having to have a subscription to something… wanna play against a friend? Grab the second controller, no online anything.

Gaming /Apocalyptic

@jonn_blanchard indeed. They are. They’ve shows us time and time again that piracy is actually the best game preservation effort we have right now. But it doesn’t need to be this way, we need official video game archives just like we have film archives or art museums.

Gaming /Apocalyptic

@gpowerf yep, the pirates might be our saviours

@darth they can indeed. As long as people continue using Windows and paying for Game Pass they probably don’t care.

Gaming /Apocalyptic

@jonn_blanchard this is why video game preservation is something that has be taken seriously.

As Microsoft turns off its 360 stores remember that no matter what platform you’re on, you don’t own digital products - you’re just renting them. If you can’t download an installer then you’re beholden to the service. And even if you do have some kind of physical install media, how many games have released recently that have required day one patches to be playable? They’ll disappear too

@darth it’s true. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo seem to be trying hard to push people away from their console platforms into PCs. Eventually PC components will be affordable again and it will make little sense to be on console.

To those who are not that familiar with oAuth, it's an authentication standard that defines the process of logging into a 3rd party client or app (like a Mastodon app).

So basically, most platforms like Facebook and Twitter require developers to sign up, wait for approval and rate limit their access

The magic of Mastodon is they use blind registration so you don't need approval and are subject to the same limits as all other clients, so you can allow users to login instantly. ✨

@freemo that’s pretty cool! The last digital chess board I had died long long ago 😔

@lpacheco @thekitmalone because at top level chess is very skewed towards male players, under 40 of the more than 1,600 international chess grandmasters are women. The root cause of this performance gap is not know and is highly debated. There’s evidence there’s an intimidation component, when playing against an opponent blind studies have shown women play close to men and worse when they know the opponent is male. In any case, this is why chess is gendered, to make sure there are female champs.
