still thinking about likes/shares and reactions more broadly. of course people want to react in some way. in real life i guess they'd nod, smile or laugh if they didn't have a reply.

but imagine how weird it would be if they never replied and just nodded, smiled and laughed all the time. that would be very one-sided and more like speaking in front of an audience than having a conversation.

the dynamic of microblogging is largely this, but it's missing the mingle after the talk. for some conferences, this mingling was crucial, so they died during the lockdowns because the Internet doesn't do it very well.

i think some of what Meta is trying to do with the Metaverse is to replicate that, so people can actually mingle on the Internet. the tech isn't new but they're a high profile company which changes things.

there isn't anything on the Internet right now that emulates running into someone in a location except for multiplayer games and those aren't exactly designed for general conversation.

These paper models of vintage computers are cute. Look at the accessories such as the documentation binders and manuals, the floppy disks, the cassette tapes.
