@gpowerf The first problem is, at least partially, solvable. We don't need central control to have a dynamic directory that can poll servers to check they're responding and I imagine the API has a way to see if a server is allowing registration. The other is more of an education issue, for that we need better constructed web pages and videos

Oh, schon wieder #RetroMontag?
Mein Beitrag heute ist halb Retro. Neues System, alte Spiele.

One thing I don't understand is why attributions cannot happen automatically in order to comply with MIT, GPL, Apache etc.

The posts you make here have a language attribute. And it matters! :ablobcatattention:

In the preferences you can actually select which languages you understand, and any post in any another language will be invisible to you. 😮

But the language of a post is not automatically detected. 🤦‍♂️
It defaults to the language of your interface.
So even if you post in English, if it's marked as German a lot of people won't see it.

You can configure the default languages in Settings » Preferences » Other

I miss the days when there were unique and bizarre new phone designs. The modern smartphone slab is perfectly practical but terribly boring.

Any tips for recovering from vertigo imbalance? I've been suffering some inner ear thing for the last three days. Any head movement faster than a snail's pace results in a trippy experience, and I'm walking a bit like I'm drunk without the fun aspect of the alcohol.

Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.

I bought these two games recently and I fully expected to love Sonic and be kind of unsure of Bayonetta. The opposite ended up being true, LOVE Bayonetta and I’m still unsure that Sonic’s open world is fun.

Amiga Friends,

Does anyone know if there is still a place in 2022 to order 68882 PLCC to PGA adapters ?

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

You’re not the product anymore. You’re a community member in your host’s ad-free server they pay for. There’s no venture capitalist payday coming for them. Everything you do here costs your host a little bit of money. Find out how you can chip in.

This is a very good point. Large/notable organizations should definitely run their own instances, and the instance being literally hosted on their domain is better than any blue check ever will be.
