And believe it or not, something like this did happen to me when I was starting to use Linux!

I was attempting to dual-boot #EasyPeasy (an #Ubuntu derivative for netbooks waaaaaay back) and didn't know that you could partition and install from the live installer. So instead I ran a tool that did the partitioning from Windows XP. Halfway through I lost power and bricked the HDD. From that point and on, it was Linux or nothing! #coldturkey

I have a fantastic System76 https://system76.com/ Thelio Mira desktop https://system76.com/desktops/thelio-mira and Gazelle laptop https://system76.com/laptops/gazelle for development and gaming, running Ubuntu 22.04.

The Gazelle is a portable desktop; for example, the battery will only last an hour or so, and it needs to plug in almost all the time. For me, that is fine; I wanted a laptop that mirrors my desktop.

Customer/technical support has been great and very responsive.

The SEGA Dreamcast VMU is still such a cool thing!

When else was there ever such a fantastic way to store saved games and also include a display that you could play a little game on or view additional information while playing the console game on the TV when the VMU was connected to your Dreamcast controller.

@MarkOfTheBeast If you go into your settings there is a spot for migrating. Be sure to set-up your new account and then migrate over. You have to create an "alias" before it imports everything. Just make sure you tell people haha and don't click buttons like I did and *then* realize I just poofed off the instance.

Nathan was/is a really great person. Sadly, once the big migration from twitter started, it didn't take long for the ick to start ruining things for him.

I'm sure this is unoriginal, but it seems that with ChatGPT and similar AI text bots, we have created philosophical zombies (p-zombies).

They have learned to talk like us, based on everything we've said on the internet. However, there's no sentience present at all.

In other words, we have created a (mostly) convincing simulacrum of a human that we can text chat with. But it has no mind, no sense of self, no consciousness. There is no risk of it becoming self-aware, because that's not how these neural networks work.

Is this a step on the path towards AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)? Yes. But even AGI doesn't mean sentience. It leads to a fascinating ethical question: what rights does a p-zombie have?

If it talks like a human, but effectively the lights are on but no one's home, do we treat it like one of us? For now, I'd say no; they just smart machines, constructs created to serve us. Ultimately, the test for AI rights has to be sentience, not convincing repartee.
