Moving from an ISP that uses faux-chummy writing to disguise their essential indifference towards their customers to one that treats me like a human being and the difference is deeply refreshing. I suppose I shouldn't become an @aaisp superfan until they have actually provided services to me but the early signs are good.

To be fair, even before playing with a MiFi+Smarty, aka Three, data SIM I knew a better solution was required.

Got a ex-Three ZTE MF286D router and
a Poynting 4G XPOL-2 antenna off eBay.
The MF286D & its two lollipop stick antenna was only marginally better than the MiFi.

Attaching the XPOL-2 was the deal, 10x improvement in thruput (speedtest.net & iPerf3). Circa 60Mb/s now, and that may be improved by proper antenna mounting rather than balanced on internal window sill.

Quite pleased for approx £90 eqpmt outlay and £20 SIM monthly recurring.

Just for good measure, I’ll try for an omni antenna to establish the difference in performance. My particular requirement is fixed but have a few non-tech friends with camper vans & caravans who may benefit.

Do I know any older folks who've been in tech for decades? I'm trying to work out how to protect my tech career from ageism over the next 25 years. I'd love to hear your perspectives.

I've been a web developer since 2000. Oxford Msc compsci. I'm really quite good at what I do, and still getting better, but I'm 40 now.

I feel ready now to reach new heights. Back in the day I had facebook cold calling me to interview with them, but I wasn't confident enough, and I'd spent too long in small, fun, companies so lacked experience in larger orgs.

I'm worried that in 10 years I'll be so obviously older and will be suffering from ageism, let alone as I reach 60+.

What can I do, now, to protect my career into my late 40s, 50s, and 60s? I'm nowhere near ready to retire early!

@u24 @neil I’ve just turned 50 and am now working in a business I co-own but before that I was working at @Sketch as a developer (not managing people) and there was no ageism at all.

My advice would be to look for companies which are not looking for rock star developers, who don’t expect people to work stupid hours but who do value experience and informal leadership (I sometimes felt like a dad at Sketch). There are lots of companies like that, they just tend to be less ‘look at us’.

The conclusion I am reaching rapidly is that #Windows is not ready as a desktop OS yet aside from hobbyist tinkering :)

Somebody really needs to start a clothing shop for men that guarantees to keep items in stock indefinitely. None of this 'item is discontinued', 'oh red isn't in fashion this year', 'we continually update our range' etc. I just want to buy the same item when the current one wears out without having to think about whether the alternatives will fit, look right etc.

Okay, so, I've just done a review of the #moderation features in both #Lemmy and #kbin, thanks to @stux and @ruud

I've written up a fuller report on the IFTAS matrix, but the tl;dr is: if you care about user safety, do not deploy either of these.

They do not feature comprehensive or well built moderation tools, and you will not be able to effectively moderate instances running this software.

You are better off waiting to deploy these once they mature more.

Just saw a presentation by @pamelasamuelson on #GenerativeAI and #Copyright (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sDGIrVO6mo). I agree with the general sentiment that AI output is likely not going to infringe the copyright of the original training data, but if you've any interest in the topic, this is a great summary from one of the leading legal scholars in the field.
