Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.

During a very difficult time, reading about stoicism has been valuable in shaping my perspective on life.

"A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy" by William B. Irvine.

"The obstacle is the way" and "The daily stoic" by Ryan Holiday. [I find these ones especially good to read a bit each day to keep some stoic principles on top of mind, "The daily stoic" is written with the explicit purpose to do that, but I find that his other books are also best read in that way.]

Musk, Trump and Kanye suffer from rich dick syndrome. As for Lanier, I'll make up my own syndrome: Reformed techie delusion, marked by former technologists who (after cashing checks) see burning bushes and decide they will save the world from themselves. This is the essence of modern moral entrepreneurship.

Indeed this is a topic about which every Earth citizen should be well-informed - and not just via the media.

This week the Cornell Lab of Ornithology released fine scale population trends maps for over 500 North American #birds based on #eBird data. These maps are the culmination of several years of research and development by the #eBird Status and Trends team, and all this work was only possible because of the amazing community of eBirders who contributed 43.8 million checklists to the dataset we used to estimate population trends.

@rakoo @Gargron @WFKARS @DataDrivenMD Yes. Orthodoxy and open might not mix well. It is true that Mastodon have developed norms, which I respect, but when something is open there is nothing to say that they cannot and will not be renegotiated.
I've long said that FB's core mistake was not working under core principles; it could have with an autocratic owner. Here, there will be competing principles and norms & they will contest. That's openness.
