If you run a telephone network, on the other hand, your costs go up exponentially as you sign up new subscribers. That's because the infrastructure necessary to connect all these people scales geometrically. To see what I mean, take a look at these stills from "The Far Sound," and old film about the Bell system: 5/
Yesterday I had to explain to a non-math undergraduate student what Riemannian geometry is. Surprisingly difficult. I tried to explain curvature in pictures and mentioned as an example that you can't make an accurate map of any region of Earth on a flat sheet of paper because the former is not flat but the latter is. I wonder what examples people use in similar situations. #mathematics #math
https://t.me/United24media/672 🇺🇦🕯 Today in Ukraine is Holodomor Remembrance Day. This is an annual national day of remembrance that falls on the fourth Saturday of November. At 16:00, a nationwide minute of silence is announced, after which the “Light a Candle” action takes place throughout Ukraine. Lighting a candle in their window, Ukrainians pay tribute to the memory of all those killed by the Soviet totalitarian regime in the early 1930s. Holodomor is the (more) #Ukraine #News #War #Russia
I wonder what will become of Twitter. Will folks stop sharing as much, drift away to other community minded places, like Mastodon?
Will it become a Wild West of awfulness, pushing away all kindness from the site?
Or will it be a pendulum swing, where Elon loses interest and survival brings back a more balanced moderation?
this is a terrific thread on the future of #mastodon on various issue it will face and is facing already.
I've seen plenty of discussions in recent days over the network structure of Mastodon and whether it can remain decentralized as large commercial players begin taking an interest in the fediverse. I am neither an engineer nor an economist, but I do research the way media and information get distributed and I have some thoughts on this. A thread…
This is what bezdorizhzhya (Ukr)/rasputitsa (Rus) season does to the frontline trenches. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian troops are experiencing this right now.

As the Holodomor Remembrance Day approaches in Ukraine, we want to share the story of Gareth Jones - the man, who told the world about the Holodomor.

It's perfectly reasonable and possible for *both* of these statements to be true:
* it is better here than on Twitter
* this better *isn't good enough*
Federation and decentralization *as currently and inconsistently and idiosyncratically practiced* while better, are not good enough.
Digging in and saying that decentralization and federation *is* good enough is really, really unhelpful.
Also, the potential for better does not mean the practical experience is better.
If you need a break from everything here is an #audiobook recommendation:
P.G. Wodehouse Volume 1 narrated by Stephen Fry (who is on mastodon btw at @stephenfry)
I **absolutely love** Jeeves stories and this is my favorite narration.
*NEW* Geopolitics Decanted episode is out!
I talk to @danny about Russian cyber attack successes and failures in Ukraine, why a conflict with China over Taiwan might see a very different cyber campaign, the scary vulnerabilities of highly networked US weapons platforms like the F35, why Russia has not yet used cyber to retaliate against the West for sanctions, and much more!
Available now on the usual podcast platforms.

Try reading this without being moved by these descriptions of not only what life was like under Russian occupation in Kherson but what it is like to be from there and to have been cut off from the city without word for months. https://on.ft.com/3AMfyQe
I’m very happy to see my friend & top Ukraine journo @berdynskykh_k@twitter.com with a great, deeply personal Kherson dispatch in @FT@twitter.com. “My hometown hadn’t changed in appearance, but the atmosphere was completely different, with scars and injuries, yet at the same time strong and courageous.”

>§#Ukraine's leaders will have to be "far-sighted" to secure peace, #Pope Francis said on Friday, suggesting that #Kyiv would have to make concessions to end the war with #Russia.
Maybe missing it, but why are these calls always directed at Kyiv? Russia could put on their big boy pants and be far sighted and offer concessions to end the war too, you know
Why do folks always talk about Russia like its an inanimate force of nature like a hurricane? They have agency too.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.
