Dr. Ellis worked at Xerox PARC, the research organization that developed the modern GUI. Icons, windows, the mouse, Ethernet-based networking, laser printing - all of these (and more) came out of PARC. Dr. Ellis led the team that created Officetalk, the first program to use icons and the Internet. He got his start at 15 years old showing a local tech company how to reuse punch cards, which was a game-changer back in 1958.

Oh, and he was also the first black man to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

German inventor and craftsman Johannes Gutenberg died #OTD in 1468.

His early printing process, and what texts he printed with movable type, are not known in great detail. His later Bibles were printed in such a way as to have required large quantities of type, some estimates suggesting as many as 100,000 individual sorts. In the following decades, punches and copper matrices became standardized in the rapidly disseminating printing presses across Europe. via @wikipedia

There is the most amazing blue stuff growing on my very old branches on a neglected and damp woodpile (slime / algae / moss / lichen?). I’ve never seen anything quite like it! (Northern Tuscany, Italy 🇮🇹 ) Not ideal for burning & heating my old house, but aesthetically pleasing. Ideas, anyone?
