Two generations of ordinary Russians seem to have fallen through the cracks of experience of their own parents under brutal repression, incarceration & extermination, (Stalin), murderous foreign aggression (the Great Patriotic War), & a political system that institutionalised lying to superiors (Chernobyl), to cheer their present leader as he showers missiles on their neighbours & erstwhile comrades.
What is the World to make of a People seemingly so immune to the lessons of their own history?
"Hannah Ritchie: ‘Doomsday predictions are a dream for climate deniers’"
I applaud this young data scientist's techno-realism and advocacy for evidence-based policy making, but there is great value in behavioural and systemic change, even in the shorter term.
There is also the role of (evidence-based) alarmism in climate messaging. This has surely stimulated positive popular reaction to environmental problems.

Here in Royston Vasey, I'd like to see "Prince Andrews [sic] Close" renamed as "Sweaty Nonce Close", but I'm not sure the royalist and Christian prayers before meetings town council would approve.
Today is the anniversary of the birth, in Bloomington, Wisconsin in 1871, of the American astronomer Anne Sewell Young.
She was appointed director of the John Payson Williston Observatory, where she supervised an observational program tracking sunspots. In 1929, she identified the comet 31P/Schwassmann–Wachmann with an object that had been misidentified as the minor planet "Adelaide" in 1904. She had a great interest in variable stars & corresponded on the subject with E C Pickering. #astronomy

German physicist Heinrich Hertz died #OTD in 1894.
The discovery that electromagnetic radiation in the microwave and radio regions of the spectrum displays the same basic behavior as visible light—reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization—was made in Karlsruhe in 1888. He then conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves predicted by James Clerk Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. The unit of frequency was named the "hertz" in his honor.
