When supermassive black holes actively feed on material, a giant rotating accretion disk of gas, dust, and shredded stars slowly swirls to its doom. Recently, astronomers have found a black hole that piled up so much material that it backed up, releasing its accretion disk in all directions. This shut down the black hole's supply of new material and changed the galaxy's structure, preventing star formation in a vast region.
