@pandion there's something in here about someone joining mastodon just really excited that so many people want to discuss pleistocene megafauna

@mike indeed - and the lesson I recall from the early days of the bird place, and all the many competitors at the time, was NOT to always replicate your bubble in each one, but to start afresh and make the most of the benefits, and opportunities of the place you are joining.

I do hope we get the opportunity to start afresh with so many things, not just "move over"

In summary: I love looking to nature for extreme examples to inform out understanding of physiology in critical illness...but this is a stretch.

I applaud the authors for thinking outside the box but I’m skeptical of their conclusions & worry about harm if people apply incorrect lessons.

I also wish the New York Times would talk to intensivists before credulously writing a story about people in the ICU like this.

#introduction post! My name is Sonia Roberts (she/her) and I'm a postdoc at Northeastern developing #knit sensors for #soft, fully knitted #robots. My PhD work was on #legged robots running around in the desert (ever gone for a beach run?). I use my robots to test ideas about #affordances and #DirectPerception. I have also done some #SciencePolicy and #TechnologyPolicy #policy work around algorithmic transparency and regulating the use of mobile sentries by law enforcement.

Hi everyone!

For a brief #introduction, I am a #personality #psychologist interested in personality dynamics broadly (short-term and long-term) and especially in the interplay of persons and their contexts.

For instance, my research asks how people differ in their reaction to different situations.

I'm enthusiastic about #Rstats, #metaanalysis, #openscience

This mask from #WWI protected tank crews against "bullet splash" caused by explosions as the tank came under fire. Tanks—which first appeared in September 1916—also left their crews susceptible to burns due to unprotected gas tanks which could ignite when hit.

Lieutenant Stanley Cohen remembered trying to pry open an escape hatch that had been jammed when his tank had been hit by a shell. He eventually escaped, but was severely disfigured.

Read more about him in my latest book #TheFacemaker.

Well okay then… feeling MUCH better this morning! But not sad about opting for sleep over late night refresh-scrolling.

No physician who tries to put someone down for their disability should be held on a pedestal. Thank you to the good people of Pennsylvania.

Another nice study showing that task and self-report measures of self-regulation/EF/cognitive control are (a) NOT measuring the same thing, but (b) BOTH measuring meaningful and important things.

Did you know it's stress awareness week?

Ufff.. I feel it, but fortunately I have amazing colleagues who are helping me as we move into the final steps of a big protect!

Keep your eye out on the #UnitedInProtection hashtag over the next weeks to discover more...

Hakwan Lau and I have a new paper on how to understand the brain, and prefrontal cortex in particular. The paper summarises one of the arguments in my new book Understanding The Prefrontal Cortex (2021, OUP).

Apologies for posting this twice, now with hashtags

Academics who are on GitHub, consider upvoting this excellent suggestion from @Edent (see link below).

The suggestion is to change the code used by ORCID's website to allow Mastodon verification links to be found. This would allow Mastodon users with an ORCID page to verify that they are the author of the publications listed on their ORCID page.

@gaffen Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a good start. I come from the sport/performance realm so I would start there. And Jackson’s work at flowcentre.org/flow-literature is another starting point if you haven’t already

I'm wondering if you might be able to help me @researchfairy ? 😅

Boosts welcome!

Hello.

I'm looking for any credible #research on #Flow and #FlowState for an article I'm writing. Specifically anything that looks at the links between flow and #learning, flow and positive #MentalHealth, and improving #focus and #mood. I'm exploring ideas around flow's relationship with the enquiring mind, and general self determination. The argument I'm trying to make is that excessive exposure to experiences that 'fake' flow states (such as gaming or TV) can have an effect on our ability to conduct independent thought and creativity.

I'm not trying to argue that gaming or movies are bad, but that excessive consumption of media can stunt creativity and wellbeing.

Any resources or references highly welcomed!

...I guess Society of the Spectacle is pretty relevant here too, might flip through it again 🤔

As you settle into Mastodon, be sure to learn the lingo:
- "toot": a tweet
- "tusking": starting a pointless fight with another user
- "woolly": going viral, as in "wow, that toot really went woolly"
- "extinction event": when a whole instance goes down

Good morning, Mastoworld. Enjoy a giant steampunk robot elephant. These are from the Isle of Machines in Nantes, that uses old shipbuilding tech to make marvels. #SomethingBeautiful
