Started watching the movie "Smile." Right at the beginning, a character says, "I'm a PhD candidate, I'm not some sort of lunatic."

Quick intro so folks can find me: I'm Alana. I'm a #disabilityrights #activist as well as a #writer and #contentcreator. I'm #disabled, #chronicallyill, #mentallyill, and #neurodivergent, #ActuallyAutistic. #EDS (and more diagnoses in my bio). #Queer, #genderqueer, and #grayace. That's a lot of hashtags. #NEISVoid

#NoireSTEMinist #MySTEMIsForTheStreets To diversify STEM, amplify STEM, normalize seeing Black and Brown engineers and engineering professors #PurposefulProfessor @AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter @OpenAcademics @YTacademics

FRIEND: It's called cauliflower. It's not ghost broccoli.

ME: [taking a long drag on my cigarette] Listen kid, I know what I saw.

I think it's glorious that there's now a Mastodon server operated by people who used to work for Twitter (macaw.social). I could have never imagined it when I started in 2016.

How to follow #Mastodon Hashtags

1. Login on your Mastodon account from your PC (unlike #Twitter, Mastodon is not well optimized as an app yet)

2. Search for your desired hashtag. Example: #mastodonon

3. Click on your desired hashtag.

4. You will get the below picture at the top of your screen.

5. Click on the (person+) button - I put it in a red circle below for clarification.

Note to all:

You do not have to be “good” at your hobbies. You should enjoy them and the process.

I love to paint, draw, collage, I love to take photos… I’ll never sell a painting or have a photo published, but I enjoy the process.

Don’t be put off of taking up a hobby because you don’t think you’ll be any good at it. If you enjoy it, that’s enough.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat those subordinate to them as well as how they treat animals. Never trust anyone who is rude to a maid or wait staff, nor one who is uncaring or cruel to animals. Never trust anyone who ridicules those less able than themselves nor one who revels in their power over others.

@steve @pwgtennant @hikenwoodwork It is a practical issue, and I think what we as users need to do is to propose easily operable criteria (if they were to be changed at all). What I don't like is when well-known tropes such as ivory towers, gatekeeping etc are simply re-iterated. On that note, I suggest that everyone drop their explicit mention of "PhD" or "Dr" in their profile names for the sake of less academic fence building and more inclusiveness 🙂

@steve @pwgtennant understood. Apologies as I may have let my disdain for structural challenges speak first. I know it has been a very busy time for all admins.

Etc, etc.

The industry of US home appraisals is super racist. So a home appraiser will appraise a home for less if they think Black people live there. So that racism affects the value of your home.

You can solve this problem by:

A) Using even more racism to keep Black families out of the neighbourhood. Double down! 😃

B) Reducing racism, and holding racist home appraisers accountable.

We should choose B.

I'm 64 and lived *under* Jim Crow and fully legal segregation. In many ways things have changed, but the inherent racism we face remains, often as strong as ever.

Defending the indefensible, like saying politician X or person Y isn't racist because they don't use certain words, is absolutely racism at work.

It's insidious and (nearly?) as prevalent as ever.

And it exists everywhere, thanks to colonialism.

If someone isn't anti-racist, then what, exactly, are they, logically?
