#30DayMapChallenge | Day 3 | #Polygons
#PowerBI #MapBox

This looks like a point map, but zoom in (way, way in) and you'll see it's actually an super-detailed polygon map.

The topic is deforestation in Brazil, over 2019-2020. A large spatial dataset was available (~50,000 shapes per year), which I integrated into a Power BI dataviz. The "hero" visualisation uses Mapbox's choropleth feature.

The whole dataviz is interactive - filtering or selecting part of any visual cross-filters the others, including re-drawing the map. This is where Power BI + MapBox are so impressive together.

I went with a satellite background layer, to highlight the natural features being impacted. Red was the obvious colour for the fire shapes, which I used for each shape's outline. As you zoom in, you can see the shape fill represents the class of deforestation.

This project was quite technically challenging, but I was quite happy with the end result, and it was of some use to at least one NGO working on this topic.

It seems that after around 20 years of very carefully and deliberately avoiding it, I’m having to learn how #PowerBI works.

Send chocolate. Beer. A flamethrower. Anything.

To quote a #NIN song lyric “I do not want this”.

This may sound weird to some of you, but today, I spent more time being productive at work then I did being engaged with the Mastodon / federated community. Felt good! #powerbi (not my favorite, but it's paying bills!)

Tomorrow I'll be tweaking some #python to improve an #azurefunction that selects files and delivers them somewhere. (Vagueness for confidentiality!)

But I _am_ enjoying the community. Even if I cannot use #markdown in my posts like I really want to...

Hey mastodon, can I tell you about my favorite #Neanderthal and what he has taught me about #DisabilityRights?

(A thread, assuming I figure out threading!)

I am fluffing... I mean, tooting... under mom's desk!

If there is anyone who is an expert at toots, it's the #mastodogs #DogsOfMastodon

So, #introduction time:

Am a #MountainLeader based in #Aviemore, in the #Cairngorms National Park in #Scotland. Been retired from guiding for a couple of years, so get out in the hills just for fun now.

Live with my husband and our dog: Michael can introduce himself, but Moray is an 11yo Australian #Kelpie who loves exploring the hills on days and overnights with me.

And am in the early stages of a duolingo course. Tha #Gàidhlig math.

@alexboyd I'll join. Here's Ranger. (Also a rescue.) And look! There's a hashtag: #dogsofmastodon

My lil’ grand pup, Kayak. Isn’t he the cutest? I've shown you mine, now you show me yours! #DogsOfMastodon #maltipoo

This app has infiltrated my entire life. My dog just farted and my husband said she’s making content 🙃😂 #dogsofmastodon

Yep - going to stick with a daily #dog pic. A smiling dog helps everyone feel better. Hops got his start in a village up near Bethel, AK., but now his heart home is Sitka. #dogsofmastodon #Alaskadogs #Alaska
