Unveiled. We gazed at one side for millennia, and by the 1960's we began to compile a view of what had been obscured. From 1967 a Lunar Farside Chart. #maps #moon #lunar #space #exploration

Got the first dish for the radio telescope array assembled. Just need to install the feed horn now. By itself it should be a reasonable amature radio telescope. But when joind up with 2 more dishes in an array, it should prove to be a cut above.

Back in August, I did a couple of nights on Messier 33, the spiral galaxy in the constellation Triangulum. A week later, over 80 liters of rain (and hail) fell in just moments causing road closures, flooded cellars and lots more chaos. We spent weeks drying out 😳

This is 123x200 seconds of data over two or three nights. One of my favorite targets, I always come back to it, I think this might be my best image of it so far 😎

Messier 33 is a nearby galaxy at 2.7 million ly from Earth. It has a diameter of 60,000 ly, that's about 2/3 the size of the #milkyway. With an angular size of 70x41 minutes of sky, it is larger than the full moon but quite dim. This image was taken with the open source imaging software, #ninastronomy and post-processed in APP and PixInsight.

Quick word about my imaging rig (!)

I make no special claims about my #astronomy #sketching. It was the first thing I did in astronomy, when I drew the Pleiades through binoculars 37 years ago. Today I sketch all sorts of things and I find it very enjoyable and a great record of my observations.

I use an small art pad, pencil roll with various grades of pencil, blending stumps and the essential moldable rubber.

Right then, I will report later on.

Off to astronomise!

#BronzeAge ruins of #Mycenae looking down from the palace complex to the cluster of homes and workshops below. It’s easy to imagine a thriving city

We don’t know much about Mycenaean #astronomy but there are indications that the #Pleiades were important for seafaring and they adopted the #Mesopotamian important agricultural constellations of #Aquarius for the rainy season and Field/Furrow (#Virgo ) for sowing & reaping

M1, the Crab Nebula shot in dualband ... almost too snall for my telescope 😊. Total exposure time was around four hours with single exposures of five minutes ... #astrophotography #astronomy #universe #cosmos

So, it's time to talk about #aliens.

Is the search for #intelligent #life just an impossible search for a microscopic pin within a mountain-sized haystack? Or is there a way to try and be smart about how we search?

A thread about some work I've been involved with that addresses this question... (1/n)

If you enjoy the thread, and you think others may do too, then please #boost it!

Shamelessly hopping on the #introduction bandwagon: Hi, I'm Ian. I'm a science communicator and space writer working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California as a media relations specialist. Space robot PR, basically. In a past life, I was a solar physicist. I love science fiction in all its forms and have a passion for #astrophysics, #astronomy and all things #space. When not typing, you'll likely find me at the #gym, #running in the hills, or at the pub with a G&T.

alright, first toot. data from early 2014, tmb92ss + mach1GTO + STT-8300M with astrodon gen2e filters. reprocessed in july 2022. 13h50m total integration time. #pixinsight #astrophotography #orion #M42 #messier42 #astro #space #astronomy

JUPITER from a few hundred images, averaged. I tried the new technique of "stacking" which takes lots of images of Jupiter (that I caught with telescope/smartphone) and digitally averages them all together. The result is this Jupiter.

The Horsehead nebula imaged in Hydrogen-Alpha wavelength.

About 3 hours total exposure time in the winter of 2015. Three images stitched into single panorama.

Atik 314L+ cooled CCD camera, Equinox 80 Pro telescope, HEQ5 Pro tracking mount.

Great news, @internetarchive is now the official Internet Archive Mastodon account. Accept no substitutes! We also have @brewsterkahle , the ever-fascinating founder of the place, and more coming soon. Hop on!

Who else is looking forward to seeing Orion in the winter sky again. Here is my image of#M42 which is the famous nebula in Orion's sword and also Sh2-279 The Running Man Nebula. I took this image with my RedCat51 using my ZWO 294MC Pro for RGB and Atik 383L+ for the H-Alpha. #astrodon #astrophotography #nebula #space #orion #astro #astronomy
