Revealing the Hidden Galaxy

I made a timelapse of my live stack while I was shooting Caldwell 5, aka the Hidden Galaxy. I think it's really cool to watch how adding more data brings out the galaxy. I only have a couple hours of data, but I'm looking forward to getting more when the moon dims again.

#introductions Hi! I'm an amateur astronomer, who has been lucky enough to turn her passion into her job by becoming the outreach coordinator at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy of the University of Amsterdam. I organize open nights at the uni, but also love sidewalk astronomy, and recently brought the library telescope project to the local public library. Am mostly a visual observer but do sometimes dabble in astrophotography. I took this Milkyway pic last weekend at a starparty.

I was trying to take a #photo of #Jupiter a couple of weekends ago for the first time ever, and thought my lens had some junk on it. Today, though, I realized that it didn't actually look like normal refraction, opened up an online chart of the solar system and discovered that, instead, I had photographed the #GalileanMoons. This was a really fun accident, and I learned a few things about exposure and #astrophotography from it!

Yet another wide angle shot of the #MilkyWay from this past camping season. So many stars make it difficult to identify constellations!

Much joy working on this as it reminds me of warm summer nights under clear #DarkSkyPreserve skies. Once gear is set up, I can recline on my "anti gravity meteor chair" & soak it in. A form of #StarBathing I guess.

The #supernova remnant, Gum Nebula, is highlighted nicely in red emission toward the right of the featured wide-angle, single-image photograph taken in late May.

Also visible in the frame are the Atacama Desert in Chile in the foreground, the Carina Nebula in the plane of our Milky Way galaxy running diagonally down from the upper left, and the neighboring Large Magellanic Cloud #galaxy.

The Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33) as seen from my backyard. It is about 2.7 million light years away from Earth and with a diameter of 61,000 light years the third largest in our local galaxy group after Andromeda and the Milky Way.

Finally got my sh-t together. 🤪 Namely, finished generating flats/darks calibration files for Cygnus Milky Way images I captured at #TerraNovaNP #DarkSkyPreserve in August.

The 35mm lens is wide enough to show other constellations around Cygnus (Lyra, Delphinius). Lots of 🤩 stars/star clouds from the Milky Way are visible as well as some familiar nebulous regions & dark nebulae. Highlighted a few in the annotated version.

In five days from now, it's going to be one year since I took my first #astrophotography picture. Not sure where the idea came from, but I decided to try to shoot the sky with my mobile phone.

The first pic is heavily cropped part of that result. Second one is the full image from that evening. And the last one is my latest image from the same target. Still a newbie, but a year makes some difference :)
