Hello! 👋 I'm new here, so here's a little #introduction about who I am & what I do as a scientific researcher 🌎

I'm a community #ecologist by training & a lot of my #PhD research was based on #TropicalForest #carbon storage in Brazil & Panama. I now lead a project investigating decision-making, trade-offs & conflicts involving people, #biodiversity, #energy & #justice, using #hydropower #dams as a model system.

I also love running, walking my dog & being in wild places 😀

I didn't take this photo but I was with my husband when he did. It was breathtaking up on Stenbury Down on the Isle of Wight, watching the mist roll in at sunset. The sheep were surprised to see us and for once the weather did what we'd hoped it would do! #SheepofMastodon

Everyone please be aware that the service we used to use that provided tickers went down and doesnt plan to go back up.. This unfortunately slows down the default theme.

As such I switched the default theme to the no-ticket theme and this works just fine. However im not sure it will help for people already signed up on the server.

To fix the problem please go intto your preferences and change the theme to the no-ticket theme.

@radehi wonderful... tickers were a styling element that showed what server a post was from, sadly is its gone now.

I HAD to bring this gorgeous Norwegian #rock face with me from the bird site :)

This rock face was likely #gneiss, a foliated #metamorphic rock where light minerals and dark minerals form in alternating bands due to high heat and pressure. This rock was further complexly folded and refolded during continental collisions and mountain building.

The rock face also has an unusual & beautiful texture caused by the more erodible bands partially eroding.

I'm an introvert who is passionate about #genealogy and #cats. My day job is wrangling data and I might mention #SQL.

I am a blue dot living near the east coast of the US, but am a native of the high desert of Northern #Arizona. I love #photos from #AZ and around the world.

At under 70, I hate to admit that I have great-grandchildren. I want them to live in a clean world with unlimited opportunities.

While I agree with these authors that the citizen science app #iNaturalist is an essential source of biodiversity data, their conclusion of “experts should all give free labor to make it work” is really odd.

The conclusion should be, “this vital service is a public good, and like other public goods it merits public funding to support more expert public servants who make it work.”

Hi, I'm Aoife - archaeologist based in Denmark. Using #dendrochronology I discover the age of old timber structures. Better though is discovering WHERE the trees grew. Because then I can map contacts between past people, as they built vessels to sail the world. My work is often key to identifying historic shipwrecks. Recently we could identify the Swedish warship Äpplet (1629) - sister ship of Vasa (1628). #archaeology #shipwrecks #knowledgeofthehumanpast

The #Tonga/#Fiji #earthquake sequence is not done yet! Another very deep M7.0 #quake today, 100s of km North of the previous deep events in the region a few days ago.

This most recent #Fiji M7.0 earthquake is not as close to the bottom of the local #intraslab seismicity as the previous deep #earthquakes a few days ago.
(note that the focal #mechanisms are projected onto the vertical cross section)
