The amount of required storage being dependent upon who and how many people I connect with (and how long I've been connected and accumulated content), that I am aware of.

I just thought there might be a chance that it's only a few MBs (possibly accumulating to GBs over time) instead of GB(s) right from the start.

When I installed and launched the android #manyverse app I looked at the getting started guide: https://scuttlebutt.nz/get-started/FAQ

It states:
"The first time you join the network there will be a lot to download and process. For real, this “inital syncing” process can take up to an hour and use a couple of gigabytes."

Is this true for #manyverse as well? Space on a smartphone isn't as plentiful as on a regular computer.

Agreed. At the moment it uses huge amounts of energy.

But. There might be a not so small chance that that's going to change in the future.

The reward for blocks being mined gets halved every 4 years. Unless the price of bitcoin reliably doubles every 4 years as well, this reward will be worth less and less money in the real world.
So the incentive to spend huge amounts of energy could become smaller and smaller.
Which in turn would mean that less energy would be used in total to "mine" coins.

Plants might not be effective/efficient enough to pull enough CO2 in their current natural genetic setup ... but as this awesome talk suggests, plants could maybe be modified to be _the_ essential factor that will save us all:

.. sondern wirklich nur als simple Mitteilung, was _dieser_ post, auf den ich antworte für mich persönlich bewirkt ..

.. auch wenn ich das vielleicht wegen _anderer_ posts, die ich interessant finde, machen würde.

Aber ich mache es nicht, weil solche posts, wie der auf den ich hier antworte für mich absolut keine Relevanz haben.

.. und es schlicht nicht skaliert, wenn man mehr als einer Hand voll solcher accounts folgen würde, die solche nicht relevanten (individuell gesehen) posts schreiben.

Ein persönlicher feed, in dem lauter solche posts auftauchen und in dem man die eigentlich interessanten suchen muss .. ist lästig.

Vielleicht ist @el_ulri@pixelfed.social dies alles vollkommen bewusst .. dann ist das ok.

I wouldn't bet on plants - as beatiful, wonderful, versatile and multi purposeful as they are - being more efficient at removing CO2 from the atmosphere than technical solutions.
I've come across at least one scientific publication that stated that photosynthesis is rather inefficient at capturing the energy of sun light and converting it into chemical compound, compared to apparatuses.

Yep, we need #openSourceHardware / #openHardware that is ideally crowdfunded ... at a scale that at least takes it in the direction of being competitive price wise ... #fairphone was/is a good start, but at 500€ it's rather unaffordable for many people.

Generally, there need to be #openSource projects that attract enough people/users to form a community where people can help each other out.

The way I see it, one main reason why projects like #lineageOS (or open source projects in general) have a hard time attracting a broader user base which would in turn boost their ability to provide decent support ... is ... that the hard-working developers are scattered across many different branches/sub-projects/devices ... that's a clear disadvantage the open-source community has compared to lets say Apple, who only have very few variants of their devices.

So what could be done?
I think people should try to stick to devices/projects/software that follow the most important (political/technological) principles but _still_ have a big user base ... getting an exotic device will maybe fulfill special combinations of personal requirements, but it will also require spending more time to troubleshoot/maintain.

#RiscV for smartphones and laptops will hopefully be a thing in the near future

Also, I'm quite sure there's a clear tendency that it's generally the richest people who can afford to buy "green" products, who still have the biggest environmental footprints ... because they simply consume a big proportion of the most resource hungry goods. Think flights, meat, cars ...
