A good day for the world's ‘children’…

… even if in the UK people have to put up with the usual No 10 downpour!

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO – to all the kids who left the Σχολείο and took to the streets. I hope this happens more often! There’s more to education than ‘jumping through hoops’!

Naïve? Absolutely not! We can live without politicians (sort of) but we definitely cannot survive without Planet Earth, our Mother and our dearest Friend!

"Grayling is, to me, the spitting image of so many mid level NHS managers.

"There's something in his floundering, his meaningless bonhomie, his faux sincerity and his inability to appear decisive or really in control that takes me right back to so many pointless, mind-numbing meetings in shabbily furnished, airless rooms - broken watercooler, missing ceiling tiles, stained carpets, yellowed noticeboards, constant trivial interruptions - where everybody knew, right from the start, that nothing of any consequence and nothing of any benefit for actual patients was going to arise.

"He even dresses the part."

"Grayling. Britain's best... " a transport secretary with basic motor skills.""

Silk woven portrait of Joseph-Marie Jacquard, woven by Michel-Marie Carquillat on a Jacquard loom - France, 1839.

The program for this weave required Carquillat to encode ~24,000 Jacquard punch cards.

The image is fine detailed enough to capture detail like the translucency of the curtains over the window.

This achievement was one of the main things that later convinced Babbage to use punch cards for his Analytical Engine, cascading into actual use in computing later on.

Why do I have this queasy feeling that not-so-great Britain is becoming a proto-fascist state? Theresa May's mishandling of Brexit is well-documented and widely acknowledged. However, people frequently ignore the fact that she is also the principal architect of the so-called 'hostile environment' that has severely blighted the lives of so many individuals and families who, in a sincere and honest way, made the UK their home. There's only one consolation here and that is that a severe retribution is waiting in the wings!

I wondered how much resources (network data, disk space) a #fedi instance would consume depending on the number of users, so I made a simple model.

tl;dr: the main issue with hosting a fediverse instance is the amount of data it sends on the network, which grows almost as the square of the number of users.
