By our best estimates there is a 1 in 500 chance betelgeuse will go supernova in my life time. I really hope I beat the odds on this one!

In the early days of personal computing, software was often distributed on 3.5" cassette tapes.

@freemo This is a completely fair criticism of the article. I suspect that what lies behind the greater dropout rate for black students involves a number of factors but these aren't listed, let alone explored in the piece.

At least once a day, presuming I do any sort of math, I mutter to myself "fucking Ramanujan".. that dude beats me to every good idea, and usually with an idea that is 1000x better than my own anyway... fucking Ramanujan.

**Interesting fact of the day**: The speed of light has only been proven to be a constant speed **round trip**. Not the instantaneous speed of light nor the speed of light while heading in a single direction has ever been able to be proven as constant.

In other words, it has never been experimentally disproved that light doesn't, for example, preferentially travel at half the speed of light in one orientation, but instantaneous in another. In fact it may very well be impossible to test the one-way speed of light due to the very consequences of relativity itself.

I am inspired today, once again, by the idea of duality and its fundemental role in our physical reality, from electrical duals, to quantum duals, to the round trip of light (earlier post) and so on...

The more time goes by and the more I think of the world as an expression of Duals (the formal term) the more I realize that duality itself may be the unifying property of the universe that all things emerge from.

I cant help but think that duality is a profound insight of the universe, but I havent quite connected the dots yet... All I know is everything we talk about seems to be only valid in duals and becomes unknowable when we try to seperate those duals in some way...

I am going to call it "The Iron Curtain of Duality"... but I feel like I need to invest time thinking about this, something is there.

This is so cool. With just a little bit of modification using a single 3d printed part glued to the side of the head of a 3d printer this japanese team managed to create a fully autonomous robot that can basically built its own tools, pick them up, and then use them to manipulate its environment.

When I suddenly lost my job at the start of the pandemic, I was ready to work for Microsoft if it came to it. Or Amazon, for that matter. Fortunately, it didn't come to that.

Principles are great, once you've worked out how to get health insurance, put food on the table, and pay the mortgage. People should pick the lesser of evils when they can, but I don't think you should shame people for working for Microsoft.
