It's much cheaper and easier than you think to start your own server on here.

If you use "managed hosting", it means the hosting company does all the techy stuff like installation, upgrades and maintenance.

The cheapest Mastodon server through managed hosting costs around 8 US dollars a month.

I've done a website all about using managed hosting at:

...and here's a long article about making your own Mastodon server:

Intro toots seem to be a thing.

I'm Mark. You may know me from my work in software security (currently Matillion, formerly Mozilla) or hobbies (I keep chickens, make stuff and play music).

I'll mostly post about hobbies. Occasionally work.

I am an Australian writer, formerly on Twitter and now trying out Mastodon. I use these social media platforms to stay connected with the wider coimhearsnachd na Gàidhlig as well as the writing, neurodivergent and transgender communities. I mostly retweet (retoot?)

Fiù 's nach eil ach droch Ghàidhlig agam, bidh mi ga cleachdadh nuar as urrainn dhomh. Mar a thathar ag ràdh: "cleachd i no chaill i!"

My home field is #modernism and I wrote a book about modernist #womenwriters and thinking about the #gift in post-WWI literature and the social sciences. Trying to fight the good fight on behalf of #UniversityPress workers. Here to boost #labor issues and organizing in #HigherEducation.

New exhibition about people who found sanctuary in Wales after fleeing from central Europe due to the National Socialist dictatorship will be on display at Aberystwyth.

Amongst those attending the official opening will be 89-year-old Renate Collins, who fled Prague on the last Kindertransport train to leave Czechoslovakia before the Second World War broke out.

As I am #Czech, it means a lot to me. Diloch, Cymru. ❤️

Can't remember the last time I wasn't working on a Saturday, being able to watch a day of rugby is a bizarre luxury (and I'm not totally sure I remember how to switch off and enjoy it).

And the #Tories won't even consider a #WindfallTax 🤬

@reasonp

@freemo I am extremely happy that the boxes I happened to whimsically check when I was signing up, led me to QOTO. This is an excellent explanation.

I love how people who have been here less tthan a day, but have been active, already have 30+ followers... really goes to show how much easier it is to connect to people here than it is on twitter.

@freemo it seems like I accidentally stumbled into the right instance! Also I'm glad there's choice out there for people who want to have massive predetermined block lists because that's how they roll, and I'm glad this choice exists for me.

I really have to say, of all the mass exodus onto this server we had over the years, this is one of the best. the quality and kindness of our new users are absolution exceptional. I appreciate all of you and welcome to the sane part of the internet!
