Big boost of 72 users new users the last 24 hours (Usually its about 10 users a day here). Not sure how long it will last but I want to welcome you all. Feel free to message me anytime if you have questions or just want to chat.

For those of you curious of the source it is most likely coming from the drama regarding the Indian judge and Twitter. He was wrongfully banned there and made a public statement about moving to mastodon. Several people followed in his footsteps in protest.

I'd imagine most of us here probably left under similar circumstances, fear of abusive moderation.

"Privacy isn't about hiding bad things, but about protecting what defines us as human beings, who we are. Our day-to-day behavior, our personality, our fears, our relationships, and our vulnerabilities."

@ppmanik Superconductivity at room temperature is still on the experimental stage and is a long way from any practical contribution. Yes, thorium is radioactive but it is unlikely to be useful as the critical temperature is -112 C. The importance of this breakthrough is that humanity will have a better understanding of the physical parameters responsible for this phenomenon.

"...the false and misleading posts promoting Turkey appeared to get a boost from a coordinated network of Twitter accounts that amplified the content through trending hashtags and retweets."

This is part of coordinated mass manipulation. By the usage of centralized service, we have no power but to please those that do. ...and often they do have oposing interest to ours.

In federated services, we as communities have that power by ourself. Tell you comrades.

Started training a bot that tries to analyze and identify hate-speech on Twitter.

A few things became quite apparent after only a few days:

1. There are huge networks of (seemingly) fake accounts that like and retweet each other's posts. Someone is operating this at a _massive_ scale.

2. Reporting and banning fake accounts seems futile. You're fighting a hydra that spawns new accounts quicker than one can report them.

3. I'm feeling sick to my stomach just browsing through the logs.

"I was listening to a Grateful Dead track and then was 'offered' "Nigel Farage LIVE in Carlisle". This is a man who tells lies and has completely poisoned UK and EU politics. Google and FACEBOOK are destroying democracy before our very eyes. Ethics? When it comes to Silicon Valley, the question is meaningless.... "

Putin proposes to replace Wikipedia with 'reliable' Russian version

Days after a new law in Russia came into effect meaning Russian government authorities can isolate its own internet, the Russian president said he wanted a Russian version of Wikipedia with "reliable information."

The Great Firewall of Russia is coming?

I went to a store this evening and saw the monitors for #security #cameras as I walked in. It was somewhat disconcerting to see people’s faces (including mine of course) enclosed in a tracking green squares as they traversed the image. I wonder what their policies are for deleting the data after a set period?

@vfrmedia "normally Canada is hardly ever on there unless its a major incident or a funny animal story..."

Exactly. Canadian fail to appreciate just how insignificant we are on the world stage all the time. Heck, in the 80's LA had so many expats it was the fourth largest city of canadians! 9% of us aren't here (same as the UK actually).

I was teasing @clacke the other night about how historical Bogotá's new lesbian mayor was, but columbia is 10 million more ppl than canada too! :-)

I Do Not Respect The Intelligence And Honesty Of This Billionaire

An excellent article using some billionaire I've never heard of as a foil.

The real shame is that just about no one on mastodon needs to read it and the people who really should read it may not be persuaded to read it :-(

For ppl living in Australia, it should be more obvious now than ever that the LNP, the ALP, the mining bosses, the corporate media and the police are all on the same side. That side is the ruling class, and they are increasingly committed to destroying your civil liberties.
