Better late than never! Let's hope 2021 will kick Covid in the butt!

Here's my summary of today's #Covid19Cymru figures:
Data is a day old. Generally not good news, but given the new year break we should be very careful drawing any conclusions from this. Tomorrow should give a clearer picture.

There were 2764 cases recorded in what would normally have been the data reported yesterday. That's significantly higher than the trend would have suggested. Could it be the Christmas Day effect? Or just data issues?
7-day average: 2257 - UP 75

R (estimate): 0.95 - UP 0.05
Whilst recent days have suggested the fall in R was flattening, or maybe even beginning to climb again, this is still a much bigger rise than I would have expected. It doesn't tend to change that quickly. Let's wait until tomorrow before drawing any conclusions.

There were 70 new deaths recorded. Again this is extraordinarily high for a single day, and further suggests that the main issue today is data, not an actual increase. Friday and Saturday are not normally especially high.
7-day average: 38.0 - UP 5.0

#Ceredigion has 33 new cases. Again, far higher than would be expected; few conclusions should be drawn, except perhaps that this is an even higher increase than seen in other data - so that's a little concerning.
7-day average: 19.71 - UP 3.71

My guess is what has happened here is that the data from 31st December - which is what is being reported on here - is more complete than usual. Therefore, we're seeing higher totals across the board than we would expect in a normal day.
Tomorrow should report two days in one, and then we'll at last be back to "normal" in terms of reporting, and hopefully patterns will emerge more clearly over the coming week.

Abstract

Quantum teleportation is essential for many quantum information technologies, including long-distance quantum networks. Using fiber-coupled devices, including state-of-the-art low-noise superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and off-the-shelf optics, we achieve conditional quantum teleportation of time-bin qubits at the telecommunication wavelength of 1536.5 nm. We measure teleportation fidelities of ≥90% that are consistent with an analytical model of our system, which includes realistic imperfections. To demonstrate the compatibility of our setup with deployed quantum networks, we teleport qubits over 22 km of single-mode fiber while transmitting qubits over an additional 22 km of fiber. Our systems, which are compatible with emerging solid-state quantum devices, provide a realistic foundation for a high-fidelity quantum Internet with practical devices.

The #UK is about to overtake #Italy again in terms of number of deaths from #Covid-19. This is not looking good.

So I wake up and pop Sky News on to see what's going on in the UK and they are reporting that the head of Public Health England is 'advising' against mixing vaccines because the government has apparently suggested that this is what that are going to do!

This following on from them deciding that they won't observe the recommended time span between doses.

We really are just one big lab experiment to them aren't we?

@Eki Hi there, I notice you've been on the server for a bit but never had a chance to welcome you, I am the admin/founder here at QOTO. Hello and welcome. Must have missed you as you seem to post sporadically.

How are you doing and how are you enjoying the community here at QOTO so far. I'd love to hear your perspectives.

Also what are your areas of interest, What sort of work do you do in the STEM field? How long have you been in STEM? Do you have any projects you've worked on you'd like to share. I haven't seen much in your profile about your STEM pursuits so would love to hear more about what you have going on.

Also if there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to reach out anytime.

Here's my summary of today's #Covid19Cymru figures:
Cases down a fair bit. R stable. Deaths up (but I predicted that - yesterday was far too low). Ceredigion improving.

There were 1831 new cases reported today. That's the first time we've been under 2000 for over 3 weeks.
7-day average: 2182 - DOWN 47

R (estimate): 0.91 (UNCHANGED)
It actually falls a touch in the third decimal place, but given the time of year, when data are expected to be less reliable, we can't read anything into that.

Yesterday I said that I believed the 13 deaths reported were "improbably" and "I expect a correction at some point". That happened today. The 65 reported is completely in line with expectations.
7-day average: 33.0 - UP 0.29

There were 13 new cases reported in #Ceredigion - the second lowest in Cymru (Môn has 9 today). The 7-day average is now 16.0 - DOWN 0.86

One final word - please don't go out partying. We've been going the right direction in Cymru the last couple of weeks. But the virus is still out there and widespread. I think the new strain(s) probably haven't gained much ground here (that could explain why we're not suffering England's fate at the moment), but we do know it's here. If I'm right about that, this makes it even more important that we minimise our risks, so that we can keep going in the right direction.

A man walks into a near-empty storefront, and asks the shopkeeper, pardon me, but are you out of meat? And the shopkeeper replies, ah, you're in the wrong place. We're out of fish. The store that's out of meat is across the street.

The only growth market Brexit has opened up for the UK is recycled Soviet-era Russian humor.

The #US may be having a bad time with nearly 4000 deaths a day from #Covid-19 and 20 million infections, the #UK has in the past couple of days had nearly 1000 deaths per day and over 50000 new infections per day. No wonder tighter measures are belatedly in place. Other parts of Europe are not doing too well either.

@matera First they came for Flash, but I did not speak out, because Flash was dead to me for almost a decade.

Then they came for JavaScript, but I did not speak out, because I block that shit for a reason.

Then they came for PHP, but I did not speak out, because I'd rather use literally anything else.

Then they came for Java, but I did not speak out, because I didn't run the JVM on any of my systems.

Then they came for Ruby, but I did not speak out, because Rails is a ghetto.

Then they came for C#, but I did not speak out, because I avoided .NET like the JVM.

Finally they came for me, and I invited them inside for tea and biscuits and thanked them for saving us from a future of webshit.
