Tackle #poverty and #inequality to reduce #crime, says #PoliceChief | #Police | The Guardian
Pity he waited until retirement but still.
I like how #Google now displays the cookie/tracking consent banner *full-page*, blocking any and all functionality of their search.
This means that for the bit more privacy conscious among us, who up until now just used private browsing mode Google search is effectively unusable.
Meanwhile, #DuckDuckGo and other privacy-conscious search engines have no cookie/tracking consent banner.
Google tried to be smart and push users to "just agree", instead they're pushing more users away. 👍

My current phone is literally falling apart, so I need a new one. I m pretty confident I want a #pinephone at some point in my life, but I'm not sure it is ready to be used as a main & only phone.
I bet there are people in the Fediverse who can help me with information! I want to know how much hassle, on a scale from Ubuntu to LFS and beyond, it is to setup the following functionlities:
1. Phone calls, making and receiving (has to be reliable).
2. SMS, sending and receiving (has to be reliable).
3. A #matrix client, with graphics (I have a weechat session on my server, but looking at pictures using only it would be a pain).
4. A (the?) #signal client.
5. Some #openstreetmap -based navigation (OSMAnd?).
6. And, of course, a #fediverse client (currently using Fediab).
Any other suggestions, information, and criticisms about the #pinephone are very welcome.
Boosts obviously appreciated.
i've tagged out 600+ open source, experimental and tiny tools by their qualities and built a new website for sorting through them!
these are all tools towards joyful digital creation, with the goal of enabling working entirely outside of proprietary systems- moving instead from one hand-made software to another.
(the list takes submissions if it is missing yours >:))
I've been on my first GNU/Linux distro for almost 3 months now. I picked Linux Mint (and I am okay with my choice, but I do think about how Manjaro as a first distro would be like), but now I have the need to switch to a different distribution, especially something rolling release.
I do not care about choosing every package that my system will have; I am fine with a little bit of software not being used on my system (This makes the incoming list preferred over Arch Linux). I care about an user distributed package manager (?) being there, such as AUR. I care about installs supporting a Window Manager such as i3. I care about my system not breaking due to an update on the OS (I have heard that this kind of stuff happens on Arch Linux, and that for this reason Manjaro filters the Arch Linux updates and gives a more stable experience (I also heard that they just delay the updates and call it stability).). So with these in mind, I have these distros and Arch Linux installers to choose from:
1- Manjaro
2- ArcoLinux
3- Garuda Linux
4- Endeavour OS
5- Anarchy Linux
I would highly appreciate any suggestion / discussion!

I read an essay by asimov in my misspent youth and whenever I read 'iambic pentameter' I'm reminded it of it. Probably, because my education is so lacking and that's all I have to hang it off. Anyhow, this isn't the essay, but contains the anecdote that drives my memory of it https://ratioscientiae.weebly.com/ratio-scientiae-blog/chemical-nomenclature-and-asimov-on-speaking-gaelic-the-irish-washerwoman-and-para-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde
People keep boosting me wondering if there is a way to (currently) get chrome to floc off and die simply in nginx for all sites, but it was answered by @mr64bit in the same thread within a few minutes of my initial post. Just add the single line:
add_header Permissions-Policy 'interest-cohort=()';
one time to
/etc/nginx/nginx.conf
I put it just before
include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf;
And then restart nginx/php7 and... voila! All the sites you have in sites-enabled/ will now send that header!
the header to opt out of #FLoC should now be set for pretty much all of #tchncs.de's
services.

I'm not sure who needs to know this... but... Inflation is a **good** thing when it occurs at a reasonably slow pace over time. It is only a bad thing when it occurs quickly (hyperinflation) or when factors cause a feedback loop where the inflation continually accelerates quickly reaching hyperinflation.
Inflation means as long as you arent hoarding cash (which no one should do) your investments are growing faster

FYI I know its not easy to keep track of other cultures holidays. So just a remind in 2 days Ramadan is coming up. So if you have any Islamic friends dont forget to wish them a wonderful Ramadan (this is a rather important holiday for them) on Tuesday.
If I recall correctly Ramadan is one of the holidays they fast on, so it might be especially appreciated if offer them a nice home baked snack or meal in the day leading up to it as a nice gesture (I dont think this is a typical "gift" for the holiday I dont really know, but just seems like a thoughtful way to go).
If any Muslim friends would like to help steer me to good ideas on this one feel free to leave your thoughts int he comments.
