It's fun that QOTO is a techie place, because a few people will read about the adventures with an AS400 and realize the state of a lot of the worlds' computer systems.

The collarary to that is that 25% of America LITERALLY doesn't know how to use a computer even in this day and age.

If you're in a part of the world that celebrates Bonfire Night / Guy Fawkes, small request: before you light the bonfire please make sure there are no animals hiding inside. 🙏

Hedgehogs and other small mammals have a tendency to hide in piles of wood or twigs that have been left in a garden or park.

Poke the bonfire thoroughly with sticks before you light it, or best option by far is to build the bonfire just before you light it.

My biggest tip for new fedi users is that when people say there's no recommendation algorithm here, they mean it. You really have to work to find things you enjoy, your timeline's not gonna curate itself. Follow lots of people to grow your network and find new people through their boosted posts. Then feel free to unfollow or even block anything you don't vibe with. This is your online space and you can do whatever you want with it.

I am a Senior Lecturer (equiv. to associate prof) at #CardiffUni in the UK. I previously worked at #HertsUni and #ESO. I did my PhD(/DPhil) in #OxfordUni, after an undergrad at #WarwickUni.
I am an extragalactic astrophysicist, mostly working in the millimeter/sub-millimeter with #ALMA. I am interested in black holes, star-formation, kinematics, dark matter, stellar populations and feedback.
I develop the #KinMS suite of tools.

We keep hearing a narrative that autocracy and fascism are on the rise worldwide. Putin and Xi consolidating power. Orban growing more powerful. Fratelli d'Italia winning a majority in Italy. But autocracy isn't winning everywhere. It's not inevitable.

There are so many similarities between TFG and Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro. It's thrilling to see a free and fair election in Brazil in which the person who believes in democracy and wants to unite the country wins. Bolsonaro is a hard-right president who, like TFG, also wants to be a dictator, Lula previously served as president of Brazil and wants to return Brazil to normal. Sounds familiar.

Two days later, Bolsonaro has not yet conceded to Lula. He may act like TFG. Or he may flee the country.

It really feels like Mastodon has what I used to love about 🐦 but what had been eroded by corporations, algorithms and trolls. I feel hopeful this can be a better more inclusive place.

So Wales stepped in to host the World Cheese Awards which were originally going to be held in Kyiv this year.

Great to see that some Ukrainian Cheese made it over.

In the 80's our mortgage rate went up to about 18% I think. 😳

I worked night duty as a nurse. 7 nights on & 7 off in A&E. 12 hour shifts But, was forced to work 4 more, of the 7 off in order to pay the mortgage on our small semi.
The children hardly saw me but we hung onto our home by the skin of our teeth!

Cymru really needs independence from Westminster. I really hope I live long enough to see it. 🤞🙏
