@mathlover @CSCPROF What's the other movie? Those are usually pretty painful, though I did love Sneakers.

qoto drama, homophobic slurs

@monotrox99 Yeah, I just love looked at the public timeline of that instance and they seem to love that word. One upside of Mastodon vs. the bird site, I can now mute that entire instance on my account and in doing so take out a lot of trash at once.

@freemo That makes sense. I would be willing to make a (monetary) contribution to that effort. Is there a good mechanism (e.g. a bounty) to do so?

@freemo I find your position reasonable and know that you help users who want to import an instance block list for their account, but I did wonder if it would be possible to add a reasonable instance block list to new QOTO accounts by default so that one could still follow one of the problematic instances but only by conscious action of removing it from the initial block list in your account.

If technically feasible, it seems like that might be a compromise position that might satisfy some critics while still accomplishing your goals of facilitating monitoring of bad actors.

@denny I won't defend the discipline of Economics (mostly because I don't know enough about it), but Behavioral Economics seems to exist precisely to address this problem and has enough clout to have collected multiple Nobel prizes.

@geoginger @markusl @KylePlantEmoji Seconded, this is definitely true. There might be some odd cases where the licensing agreement with the journal that a scientist published in might preclude this, but certainly it was allowed by every journal I published in. And I don't think I've ever met a scientist who would say no to such a request.

@futurebird @tao I know LaTeX is supported on mathstodon.xyz and qoto.org, but I assume that there are others.

@johnmdudley Usage is inconsistent in my experience. I think I would tend to treat "dynamics" as plural when it stands alone as a noun (e.g. "the dynamics are nonlinear") but generally singular when referring to a type of dynamics in a noun phrase (e.g. "nonlinear dynamics is a well-studied phenomenon").

If one is publishing in a specific journal, it may pay to check the style guide for that journal. I was curious what a general dictionary would say and see Merriam-Webster says "plural in form but singular or plural in construction".

@priyankaboghani I'm new too, so take with a grain of salt, but when you reply there should be a setting for visibility (for me it shows up as a lock below the text box). I believe that anyone mentioned in a reply (with @) will see it regardless of the setting, but I believe that will allow you to control whether your followers or the general public see it. I have seen it recommended (e.g. in this guide: axbom.com/mastodon-tips/) to reply unlisted to avoid clogging the public feeds.

@InSearchOf @cassolotl I *think* that when you search on a hashtag you end up with the subset of your federated timeline that used that hashtag. But, again, I'm new so I could be wrong.

I guess it's time for a . I'm a theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information) and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in free-space optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts). I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally enjoying nature.

I'm definitely interested in following , but I'm also just curious to see the mix of interesting photos and thoughts on myriad topics that may show up here.

I'm sort of part of the , but I honestly haven't used the bird site all that much in recent times, and as a FOSS/Linux geek I've been interested in federated services like Mastodon for quite a while.
