Welcome to the #Fediverse to colleagues in @PolarRES -
a #HorizonEurope project developing and running leading edge #RCMs (regional #ClimateModels) of both the #Arctic + #Antarctica...
#PolarRES is also something of a sister project to @OceanIceEU
@MartinEscardo - yes, it's amazingly impressive. The computers on board the Voyagers have ridiculously little memory by modern standards, but it was deployed expertly:
"There are three different computer types on the Voyager spacecraft, two of each kind, sometimes used for redundancy. They are proprietary, custom-built computers built from CMOS and TTL medium-scale CMOS integrated circuits and discrete components, mostly from the 7400 series of Texas Instruments Total number of words among the six computers is about 32K.
The Computer Command System (CCS), the central controller of the spacecraft, has two 18-bit word, interrupt-type processors with 4096 words each of non-volatile plated-wire memory. During most of the Voyager mission the two CCS computers on each spacecraft were used non-redundantly to increase the command and processing capability of the spacecraft. The CCS is nearly identical to the system flown on the Viking spacecraft.[37]
The Flight Data System (FDS) is two 16-bit word machines with modular memories and 8198 words each.
The Attitude and Articulation Control System (AACS) is two 18-bit word machines with 4096 words each."
I'm calculating that this is a total of 425,984 bits!

The really sad thing that keeps happening is users get locked out of Gmail, with no way to jump through Google's flaming hoops, and that's the end. They are permanently punished. No phone associated with their account, or phone number out of date, no working alternate email addresses for recovery. Years of email likely lost forever. Don't use Gmail. They will not help you and they don't care.
@Wolven "You consent by using Zoom because you definitely read the endless pages of legalese while hurriedly installing Zoom for that parent teacher conference."
MIT Press maintains a set of their books that are listed as "Open Access", and of them, 297 different books and documents provide a helpful PDF edition of their titles.
I have "ported" these over to the Internet Archive where they live a life and have links back to their original MIT Press pages should you want to buy a hard copy:
The most egregious thing about doctors no longer wearing masks as a universal precaution is that they are most peoples' most immediate role model in terms of anything public health related -- if their doctor doesn't care, then why should they?
"... we propose an updated standard for universal precautions in healthcare settings: permanently including universal masking in routine patient-care interactions."
It's a bit weird to have somebody close to you with a chronic illness who needs to regularly use healthcare services and be the only one in their life that actually worries about COVID.
It's still around. Long COVID is still a thing. People with chronic illnesses can get really sick.
But nobody seems willing to take even the slightest precaution. Not even my relatives with the chronic illnesses, because everybody everywhere is telling them that COVID is over. 😑
just watched a video about the lack of bicycles in hollywood productions. e.g. there are post apocalypse shows where there's no fuel or they can't use engines for other reasons, and the characters are shown walking or riding a horse. they never try bikes even though it's the most popular mode of transportation on the planet. Daryl from TWD on a bicycle? uncool. if a protagonist is doing it, it's a comedy. riding a bicycle is seen as a ridiculous thing to do unless you're a child. I am stunned.
Ever wonder who you should follow on Mastodon? I just published updated lists of accounts I follow, covering InfoSec, STEM, NatSec, politics, and more. You can import the lists using my mastodon-listmanager utility.

This shot perfectly displays our approach to #ClimateChange.

@nf3xn
I mean, after I read in disbelief that their earlier encryption problems involved using AES in ECB mode (which seems like someone failed crypto 101), I pretty much determined that it would be foolish to trust them with any data that needs to stay private (assuming you have a choice). But this AI training aspect is really the icing on the cake!
@Wolven
@siderea It's also not great that the "Posts" tab lumps together original posts with boosts. When deciding whether to follow, I'd like to know what they actually have to say.
Mastodon's Mastodon'ts.
There are a few fundamentally broken things about how Mastodon posts work that are terrible vectors for abuse, as well as being bad for basic usability. Maybe they are fixable, I don't know. To be clear: I am a fan of Mastodon....

@Wolven
I was thinking the same thing for UCSD and SDCCD where I teach. Can anyone recommend good alternatives. #BigBlueButton was tricky for me. Was only able to use it to host a couple meetings. Similarly and even less successfully for #jitsi.

@SocialJusticeHeals
@timnitGebru The "Please submit an appeal if anything appears incorrect or if you’d like to share more details" is particularly galling, given that they have not provided any details of the supposed infraction. How would you know what to dispute? The entire message seems clearly to be in bad faith, which is, unfortunately, not surprising.
I guess today is as good a day as any to wake up to an email saying that I'm banned from #Airbnb without any explanation whatsoever? And right after I was scammed on their platform & they had to refund me money.
I supposedly didn't follow their terms of service. How? Who knows?
Another one to add to the #airbnbwhileblack diaries smh.
Rotor #clouds over the Swiss #Alps, as seen from Ausserbinn, Canton of #Valais. These are caused by lee #waves (a kind of gravity wave) over #mountains. Extremely dangerous for aircraft, can exist even in clear air. We can see them in this #timelapse thanks to the condensed moisture entrained by wave.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
