While I believe the fediverse is the best way forward for social media, and hope Twitter emigrants will choose a truly decentralized future, the immediate goal should be to make the deadbird site irrelevant for everyone who wants a refuge from the rancid extremism that Musk is promoting there.

Let's welcome the people who come here -- and help them make the move.

Interesting - was just flipping through this (kansascityfed.org/Jackson%20Ho) And he noted that as society gets less sexist/racist, talent gets better allocated. I wonder how much total factor productivity gain over the last century came from just... not actively damaging the lives of talented people? That's nice but suggests future gains will be harder, right?

“The start of the deceleration to the landing on the Moon’s surface is expected to be a breathless, numbing 20 minutes of terror!” says Kushiki Kenji.

The "Smart Lander for Investigating Moon" (SLIM) is a technology demonstration designed to land on sloped terrain within 100m of the target spot. This is a factor of 10 better than conventional landers can achieve! Such precision is needed for future crewed exploration on the Moon and Mars.

“This is puzzling,” notes Yamaguchi Hiroya. “Currently, we have virtually no idea of what is really going on at the centre of clusters.”

The XRISM X-ray space telescope was jointly developed by JAXA and NASA. This is the rebirth of the ASTRO-H/Hitomi telescope, that was lost in 2016.

Measuring diffuse super hot gas is surprisingly difficult, and no previous telescope has been able to see many of these structures, such as the action inside galaxy clusters.

#JAXA have launched the #XRISM X-ray space telescope for studying the hottest gas in the Universe, and #SLIM: a "smart lander" for making a high-precision landing on the lunar surface (essential tech for future crewed missions).

It's 10 minutes into the flight and so far, everything seems to be going well.

@LetsBuild@famichiki.jp @elizabethtasker I assume that's / SLIM (if that was just taken).

My first post in Mastodon!
I'm Nosrat, I'm doing my PhD in computational neuroscience in university of Geneva.
I’m working on understanding underlying dynamics via direct measurement of neural spiking under the supervision of Timothée Proix.
A repost would be amazing as I’m finding my network here in Mastodon.

Hi Internet! I'm Drew and THIS IS MY FACE.

If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease!

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they've automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.

@Wolven I bet that rando was also discovered that Einstein was wrong and formulated a unified field theory that explains all of nature if only professional physicists would listen. ;-)

@Wolven Actually, this always struck me as one of the best reasons to be interested in cryptocurrency, with the idea that it might create a mechanism for online payments not controlled by any such cartel. Of course, cryptocurrency has turned out to be impractical as a payment system (for social and technical reasons) and have the pretty predictable negative side-effects, so it doesn't seem like it's actually a good solution to that problem.

@Wolven I've seen this pattern before on the Internet where people need to pay the bills for their site, and the only viable mechanism to collect payments is through credit cards, so the credit card processor oligopoly becomes the de facto arbiter of what forms of expression are acceptable. It's awful.

my university has set up a tailor-made backchannel to OpenAI's ChatGPT engine, to ensure data stays in Europe and user identities are protected, and is now encouraging students and faculty to use ChatGPT (or "GPT UiO") in research and teaching.
