This bonkers story about how a former DJ sold thousands of airplane engine components with bogus documentation that are installed in airplanes worldwide might be a good inspiration to fly less. 😬

@gilles Indeed. So now when a person adds Gmail to Outlook, they have both Google and Microsoft farming their data and training AIs.
We are doing everything in our power within the next year to make Thunderbird a complete end-to-end solution for people who want to escape the Gmail + Outlook ecosystems.

Bidirectional comms to Psyche is now active via NASA DSN.
Uplink power needed is just 200 watts, given the gain of the antenna.

Yesterday I spoke to an MIT sophomore hoping to get an interview for a Google internship. The student has already done one summer internship at another company, enters programming competitions, and has coursework in machine learning, distributed systems, and neuroscience. So far they have submitted over 40 internship applications.🤯
From all their applications, they've only gotten two OAs (online assessments), and no interviews.
It is so much harder for kids today than when we were young.
Learning is not the product of teaching. Learning is the product of the activity of learners.

Psyche (the spacecraft) is headed to Psyche (the asteroid). Not just any asteroid, but a strange, metal-rich one.
It might be the exposed core of a protoplanet that was destroyed billions of years ago. But we won't know for sure until we get there.

I've had more opportunities recently to create plots with #SwiftUI / Swift Charts / #Swift playgrounds and the process absolutely holds up in replacing #python / #matplotlib / #jupyter.
The dataset was larger this time, ~100k records, each containing a handful of data points, exported from a Postgres DB as JSON.
Massaging the data in a typesafe way is an absolute blessing – it's so easy to plot the wrong thing in python as you drill through three dicts.
Really happy with the results!

Yay! Take it, Corona!
And thanks to mastodon for helping me find a place in #Münster to get the shot!
You take an arrow to the knee, and you're not an adventurer anymore.
Years later you still limp, but the arrow? Long gone. It did its work in an instant.
This is #LongCovid. You no longer test positive for the virus, but you're not an adventurer anymore.
"Long COVID" does not mean "having COVID for a long time."
It means the virus disabled you.
Yes, that's a thing viruses can do. Don't give this one the chance.
I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
There are claims that solar uptake will lead to "waste mountains".
But new research says:
"35 years of cumulative PV module waste (2016–2050) is dwarfed by waste generated by fossil fuel energy & other common waste streams"
Great piece by @davevetter
OK fedi, I want to make sure I'm not missing things—please point me to the best arguments on how decentralizing/federating content moderation + other safety work improves outcomes for humans in a world where fedi scales up fast over the next year, compared to centralized networks.

@ilinamorato I think generally Mastodon is a hard sell for many organizations because of limited reach. Twitter was already the lowest reach platform many orgs were on pre-Musk, and Mastodon has only a fraction of Twitter's former userbase. There are arguments that journalistic organizations have unique reasons to want to be on a truly open platform where they have total control of their account, but it's a hard choice to make for organizations with scarce resources. @bhawthorne @adrien @briankrebs @NPR @gbhnews
@NPR dropped Twitter and maintained almost all of their traffic. #Journalists, get off #Twitter.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
