I'm not endorsing #Bluesky one way or another (it's like a chatty, pared-down Twitter with no ads and no DMs), but I have a couple invite codes if anyone's interested.

I updated my #firefox #extension that gives you the amazing JSON Editor Online (jsoneditoronline.org) as a quick local extension.

The original is probably safe, but I never feel comfortable pasting sensitive #JSON data to an online webpage, so I made this to be sure. Also very handy to have locally in the browser I think.

Check it out here:

I'm considering whether to try to split my Mastodon presence into multiple accounts. Basically, I have three different interests: 1) quasi-professional interactions with STEM professionals, 2) exchanging information related to my local area (there is a regionally-specific server), and 3) general interest posting, so I'm considering setting up as many as 3 different accounts. I just don't post that much, so it may not be worth it, but I definitely find that there are things I don't post or boost basically because I don't necessarily want to co-mingle (3) with (1) and (2) too much.

So I'm looking for advice on a) whether splitting accounts that way is really worth it (I know others have done this), b) whether there are other technical solutions I don't know about, and c) how one would best go about splitting things up and hopefully getting followers moved over to the appropriate new accounts.

Hey developers!

YEAH?

Do you like solving problems?

YEAH!

Do you like reverse engineering?

...YEah..

Do you like having zero documentation?

..uhm..

Buy a house! Enjoy a lifetime of fixing other people's undocumented hacks while introducing your own!

@johncarlosbaez Well, yes, I can't argue with your last point. However, it is sometimes interesting to hear people speak about these things from different points of view. But, again, it's only interesting if they're given the time to explain potentially subtle points.

@_thegeoff One question I always have is about mathematical Platonism is "which math"? Which is to say that there are multiple different ways of formalizing mathematics, e.g. you might or might not believe in the Axiom of Choice, you might be a constructivist and not follow the principle of excluded middle, or you might be a frequentist or a Baysian. If one believes that math is just a synthetic language that may describe some things in nature, it seems that one can be much more non-committal on these matters than if one takes them as matters of ontology.

#Harvard is giving a free, online, intro-to-cybersecurity class, starting TODAY. It's a live class, and it's for technical and non-technical folks, all levels. Sign up here:

Thanks to @clintgibler for telling me about it!

Oh wow, someone thinks they proved a conjecture I made in 2014 on @johncarlosbaez ’s AMS blog, about fitting a simplex between two nested spheres in n dimensions!

Their proof:

🤔 The US government is the most well funded in the world. We have Federal agencies dedicated to emergency management (FEMA). We have a robust network of highways. We have the best access to electricity and fossil fuels. Most US citizens are adults. Despite all this, when there is a hurricane, we struggle to evacuate a few million people from the path of a slow moving weather event.

If most Palestinians are children, who have no fuel or electricity, how do they evacuate a million people?

Even forensic experts can be misleading in their testimonies during trials.

How can courts help ordinary jurors critically evaluate the forensic testimony they hear in court?

A short video made by researchers made a big difference in an experiment.

Hey, early risers - If you are up before dawn and looking east, that really bright “star” is the planet Venus, currently at its greatest western elongation (translation, it’s as far away from the Sun as it’s going to get for the next few days, so higher in the sky, and easier to see in the morning before sunrise).

The stars making up the “backwards question mark” above Venus, and the triangle of stars to the left, are part of the constellation Leo.

@johncarlosbaez Isn't #3 something you've already written about on many occasions (or perhaps I'm misremembering)? Or do you just not want to *talk* about it?

I will say that I admittedly find it silly when things like string theory are discussed on a general-interest show/podcast, since the discussion is necessarily at such a superficial/simplified level. But there are exceptions, like Sean Carroll's Mindscape, which generally takes significant time to build up discussions of prerequisites to have a bit more meat to the discussions.

Next time some well-meaning but history-blind Pākeha asks why Māori are still banging on about colonisation that happened a century ago, sit them down with No Māori Allowed.

"The documentary... reveals that from 1920 until the early 1960s, Māori [in Pukekohe] were barred from public toilets, segregated at the cinema and swimming baths, refused alcohol, haircuts and taxi rides, forced to stand for white bus passengers and barred from schools."

A jury has awarded a female executive Google executive $1.1 million and found the company guilty of gender discrimination.

They gave higher pay to less-experienced male cohorts & denied her promotions in retaliation for her complaints.

This happens all over big tech but people rarely file complaints because of fear of permanent harm to their careers. Kudos to Ulku Rowe for taking on Google and winning.

I miss the joy and wonder of using a computer for the first time.

I loved my ZX81 and then spectrum.

Whilst my friends were playing games on it. I taught myself to program it, first in ZX Basic and then into Machine Code.

Lost whole weekends just coding away... good times.

Honestly surprised Microsofts 28 billion in back taxes isn't a bigger story. That's $100 effectively taken from every single person in the country.
