@casey @pluralistic Easy: show her one of the many cases where Google now turns complete nonsense into a "featured snippet" - such as this one:
NPR’s data shows that they lost nothing after being ostracized by the psychotic white billionaire. It counters the idea that leaving Twitter is a loss. Let’s dismiss the idea that we need to be held hostage on any platform.

Slack follows in Apple’s footsteps. X is dying. It’s obvious. https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/24/23930686/slack-x-twitter-integration-retires-api-pricing
Wix fires employee for Gaza support, tells staff to “join a company initiative to create videos and creative campaigns”, to “support Israel’s narrative” … “show Westernity” in posts, as “unlike the Gazans, we look and live like Europeans and Americans”. It’s “very important to emphasise this in texts and images so that they feel close to us”
Internal Wix chat encouraged staff to support Israel’s ‘narrative’ in Hamas conflict
If you prefer to read things instead of listening (as do I myself; not an audio person ... 😅 ), Physics World has now turned the podcast with me into a written interview:
It's about my science, but also about all the things I do as a scientist that are not my science - climate crisis outreach and Astronomers for Planet Earth (@a4e), my art and outreach in general.
Hi, @academicchatter -- do any of you working in larger (30+ people) collaboration have good experiences with any sort of project management/tracking system?
Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite looks like the Windows world’s answer to Apple Silicon
Snapdragon X Elite PCs should begin to arrive in mid-2024, but obstacles remain.
Last week's lead-crime video inspired many people to tell me about the ABORTION-crime hypothesis, made famous in the book Freakonomics. So, today's video is all about why Roe v Wade probably did NOT reduce crime 20 years later https://skepchick.org/2023/10/did-legalizing-abortion-reduce-crime-20-years-later/
A victory for San Franciscans who oppose being guinea pigs in Big Tech's dangerous experiment. Now, we need to get Waymo off our roads too:
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has suspended Cruise from operating its driverless taxis in San Francisco, effective immediately.
The DMV, one of the state’s regulators for self-driving cars, said there is no set expiration for the suspension. At this time, the DMV says the suspension of Cruise’s driverless ops is based on the determination that “the manufacturer’s vehicles are not safe for the public’s operation.”
The DMV’s suspension means that Cruise cannot use its robotaxis without a human driver present, neither for free nor during paid rides. The company is still allowed to test its technology with a safety driver.

Many robocallers don’t pay fines, as FCC still lacks legal power to collect
"Fines go uncollected, and the company dissolves and moves assets elsewhere."
@internic I'm also considering splitting my #Mastodon presence across 2-3 instances. Most of my follows are on lists, so ideally I'd find a tool to "migrate everyone except the ones on these three lists."
I think I'll just move everything onto my new "home" instance (#qoto, probably) and manually refollow my favorites on the old instance.
I'm unclear about the effect of putting a #redirect on the old instance, as we're advised to do--will that hamper my ability to continue having a distinct presence there?
Well, I guess maybe it doesn't look so good, as Dan Goodin points out that most of this disclosure only came after they became aware of what he was publishing.
@ianbetteridge @pluralistic ah the app cartel
".... If Google and Apple were competing over mobile, you’d expect that one of them would drop the sky-high 30 percent rake they charge on in-app payments, but that would mess up their mutual good thing. Instead, these “competitors” charge exactly the same price for a service with minimal operating costs."
I shudder at losing 2-3% in sales to credit card fees. Having 10-15 times that scooped up every time you sell your app? Ongoing pain.
I've been reading @jkosseff's amazingly titled new book, Liar in a Crowded Theater, about online misinfo and the First Amendment.
If you're in DC, join Jeff and me for a book chat at Busboys & Poets on Thursday at 6pm.
I had heard this story in passing and thought it must be satire, but, no, per @pluralistic, this happened and is more bizarre than I realized.
NPR: After a talk by Pulitzer winner Viet Thanh Nguyen was "postponed," some authors also pulled out of future events. The writer had signed an open letter criticizing Israel and calling for a ceasefire.#news #NPR https://www.npr.org/2023/10/24/1208204142/staff-at-nyc-cultural-center-resign-after-acclaimed-authors-event-canceled
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
