Update: AP — Ohio voters pass a constitutional amendment protecting access to abortion, extending statewide wins for abortion rights.
I told you back in 2016 that there was a very real possibility that several computer vision systems used in everything from those bullet-vibe security bots to autonomous vehicles very likely had trouble recognizing and categorizing children as human beings, and well, here you go:

Marie Curie was born #OTD (7 Nov) in 1867. She coined the term 'radioactivity', discovered two elements, and is still the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two sciences (chemistry and physics) https://wp.me/s4aPLT-curie

My story was having to click past three screens that insisted I sign up for Prime to buy something.
On the third, the option to NOT get Prime was, no joke, in six-point type in the corner.
I carefully clicked on that... and was signed up for Prime.
I managed to un-subscribe from it, cancel the purchase, and remove the credit cards.
I couldn't actually kill my Amazon account - the screens to do that went in circles..and one noted I'd lose the Kindle books.

Hey scicommers! The good folks at The Planetary Society is looking for a science editor. There's a chance — maybe small, maybe 0, I can't say, I don't speak for them — that you can make Bill Nye says stuff. I've done that and it's fun.
LIFE HACK
How I use ChatGPT to write stuff:
1. Write out a prompt to generate the text I want
2. Read the response
3. Go "this is fucking garbage, what the fuck, you call that writing?"
4. Get pissed off and write the thing correctly

No. Succeeding in love is not easy, and there's no formula for it.
Here's the essence of this bad take:
"Since life is itself simply a game in disguise, having a few mathematical tricks up your sleeve can also give you an edge in the game of life."
Life is not simply a game in disguise. There are no fixed rules, apart from possibly the laws of physics. More importantly, there's no fixed definition of what counts as "winning". In fact the whole concept of "winning" doesn't apply, except in very limited realms.
I'm reminded of an anecdote I heard from the statistician Persi Diaconis. I'll probably get the details wrong, but it goes something like this:
Persi Diaconis was friends with an economist who had just gotten two job offers, one on the east coast of the US and one on the west coast. The economist was having a lot of trouble deciding which offer to take: both had their pros and cons. So Diaconis said "Hey, why not use the mathematics you're always talking about? Compute the expected utility in each case, and pick the offer that maximizes it!"
And the economist said "Come on, Persi! This is SERIOUS!"

In a recent study, an international team of astronomers (including researchers with Breakthrough Listen) recommended that future technosignature searches rely on multi-site simultaneous observations. This has the potential of eliminating interference from terrestrial sources and narrowing the search for extraterrestrial radio signals.

If a transgression by a single employee breaches your network, you're doing it wrong.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
