Hasbro, despite having a record year for D&D and M:tG, is laying off 1100 people due to its weak toy sales. Its CEO pocketed $ 9 million.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke recently revealed that there's "almost nobody left" on the Dungeons & Dragon team at Wizards of the Coast that helped greenlight the title in the first place.

I am working on a replacement for #fedifinder: Cross platform follow management.
I want to make it easy to reconnect with people you like but also to disconnect from the ones you don't like. Show you if someone joined a platform you are using as well and help you remove them from your followings if you are no longer interested in their content or want to block them. Without searching for them individually on each platform.
Main challenges:
- Tech: Many platforms don't have APIs anymore
- Legal: Platforms try to prohibit scraping
- Legal: What legal basis do I have for data collection and processing
- Ethic: How to not show accounts who do not want to be shown (I want to only use public information. Eg. links in bios or on websites. Is following no-index tags and nobot in bios enough?)
- Money: Putting some features behind a paywall or find a different model
Before I invest time into coding, I would love to hear your opinions. (I have a small budget for consultations. If you have more to say, feel free to sent me a mail hello@lucahammer.com with your fee. Especially if you are part of a marginalized group and/or could be hurt by a service that makes it easy to discover accounts across multiple platforms.)
Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) is now out of pre-order and into normal ordering! Many configurations ship directly from inventory within a few business days, and all ship within two weeks. October and November were both record months for us for factory output.
Deeply troubled by this decision that will only fund tech education in the absence of DEI support, enshrining the exclusion and discrimination that have been built into engineering for decades

@emc2 Even with all the noise the last time around, it seemed like mastodon.social was willing to federate, and given its size and position it seems like most major instances would not defederate from them long term, so it seems like maybe that's all that matters for practical purposes.

Parts pairing still irks right-to-repair activists, though.
An exciting development for a new Covid vaccine: inhaled single dose induces strong mucosal immunity and protection in multiple species, including non-human primates, and prevents transmission across all variants assessed
Blog entry: When agencies procure custom software, but keep the source closed, they are putting themselves at a significant disadvantage. There are some enormously compelling arguments—and some surprising arguments—in favor of agencies preemptively publishing source code. https://waldo.jaquith.org/blog/2023/12/publish-open-source/
So much for people saying Threads won't support Fediverse integration. I've been dogfooding the feature since before the service launched and the team has 100% been planning to support interoperability with Mastodon from day one.
Kudos to all the folks on the Threads team who've been working on this. So glad to see this test announced before the end of the year.

Manufacturer deliberately bricked trains repaired by competitors, hackers find
The train manufacturer accused the hackers of slander.
I know some people don't want their public Mastodon posts to be searchable. This reminder isn't for them. It's for everyone else: Please take a minute to update your Mastodon preferences to make your public posts searchable. This ensures more people can easily find your public posts on a given topic. This makes Mastodon a more useful place for all of us and gives Mastodon holdouts more incentive to join the fediverse.
The Polish hackers who heroically fixed a series of NEWAG passenger trains that the manufacturer had artificially bricked with DRM are now being threatened with lawsuits from NEWAG. NEWAG has also filed a complaint with Polish authorities and has demanded the trains be removed from service.
Hackers fixed the trains *with permission from the trains' owner*
Repair expert told us this is "classic OEM bullshit," just on a train this time

FFmpeg multithreading has landed in the dev branch! This is going to be a really big deal once it lands in a stable release; looks like it should mean substantial performance improvements. https://www.phoronix.com/news/FFmpeg-CLI-MT-Merged
So I can finally tell you about one of the things I've been being SUPER impatient about:
If you're out in the world and happen to see a magazine with the words "Time," "Special Edition," "Artificial Intelligence," and "A New Age Of Possibilities" on the cover, you uhh… might wanna give pg. 28 a look 👀
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
