@johnlogic @gringlegrif I have a PHEV with 50+ miles of electric range and this works out pretty well for me. Most days I don't burn any gas, but once every week or two I'll exceed the electric range and use a little gas. I've taken to just filling up a quarter tank (unless I expect to be doing a lot of distance driving soon). This works out well, in that I generally have to re-fill every month or two.
So I get to have the convenience of gas refills when needed but have reduced my gas consumption to ~5% of what it was previously. The one downside, of course, being more components to break (although I have not had issues yet).
The software on mine also tracks the time since last fill, so it will make you burn the gas if you go too long. I like to be a little more conservative, but the point is that this problem is addressed. I would assume the same is true for the vehicle in the article. @arstechnica
The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander’s big battery makes it a BEV alternative
Charge it every night and you may only ever run the engine on road trips.

Today's story caps months worth of work with colleagues on a Washington Post series about critical changes in India's public governance through its domination of technology.
This piece delves into what happened before and after Apple warned journalists and politicians in India Oct. 30 that a country was attacking their phones.
What we found: The evidence suggests that India is using Pegasus again, and again going after its critics in civil society.
More surprising, and a clear sign of what the current Indian government expects from major tech companies: Ministers went on the attack against Apple, which sees India as a major market for growth.

I just wanna thank @pluralistic and the reprise of his interview on the CBC for making me realize that the whole push to address "junk fees" is just yet another case of governments attacking the symptoms of a market structural failures rather than the cause: consolidation/lack of competition allowing companies to take advantage of their customers. It's a token gesture, a policy flailing because they refuse to do the long and hard work of fixing these markets. #economics

We are celebrating Christmas at partner's parents with the same raclette grill as 20 years ago - which is pretty impressive, but not quiet as much as the Voyager spacecrafts 😅 Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977 - still working, still teaching us new things about the most external parts of the solar system.
With many thanks to @schnedan for the idea :)

Reuters has taken down -- globally -- an important hacking-for-profit investigation that included details about an Indian hacking "entrepreneur" -- because he got a court in that country to say so.
This is a huge danger to free speech and serious journalism.
Reuters deserved praise for its initial investigation. It deserves the opposite now.
(The New Yorker is apparently one of the few publications that hasn't bowed to the pressure.

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
