@meredithw @mmasnick I know there are a number of instances running forked versions that seem to nominally support full text search and QTs (the one I'm on being one example), but I'm assuming that the search will only search the content of the federated timeline, so I guess maybe that's why it doesn't cut it.

What Mastodon servers currently support ? The only ones I know of are (where it's currently somewhat broken) and . Also are there any that support displaying it? I currently use on my phone, which does not.

@rebeccawatson Wasn't RFK Jr. also a fake election fraud crackpot who falsely claimed that Bush stole the 2004 election. Thankfully this wasn't nearly as successful on the Democratic side as Trump was on the Republican side.

@axnxcamr Yeah, I figured that you were unaware and just making a joke, but I wasn't sure. I thought I'd share since it's an interesting and poignant story.

@axnxcamr @XanIndigo I'm not sure if you're intentionally referencing the story of the tree Prometheus, which was determined to be the oldest (non-clonal) organism in the world...after they cut it down to count the tree rings. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promet

@mhoye Every time I have to refer to something on Teams and construct a sentence like "we should get your team added to that team on Teams" I think of this bit from The IT Crowd:

@joshcarlosjosh Great to seen you here *and* adding alt text to your images!

@rmflight @mhoye Maybe I'm missing something, but that sounds to me like the incremental reverse history search you get in bash by pressing Ctrl+r

@markusl The one thing using version control did help with was that the 3-way merge meant that, if my advisor took days or weeks to give back comments on a draft, I could easily merge the changes into whatever later version I was up to.

@markusl Honestly sophisticated revision control is probably overkill anyway if there's only one person editing the document. People should use whatever works for them, as long as they follow @librarianshipwreck 's basic principal.

@librarianshipwreck When I was writing my dissertation I tracked revisions using the source code revision control system Mercurial (I was writing it in LaTeX, which may make it more appropriate), and I think I pushed that to a private BitBucket repo online for redundancy. I can't imagine the anguish if one were to lose one's dissertation draft.

@DebsBookReviews@mastodon.world Since you're just doing it for fun and passion, you may not feel like posting in another place, but I thought it worth mentioning that there is a set of fediverse book review sites: bookwyrm
joinbookwyrm.com/instances/

@grimalkina Thanks! I'm interested to learn more about your work, and while I might prefer to read about it, I'm more likely to get to it sooner in audio (because I can listen while doing physical tasks), so a podcast appearance useful.

@librarianshipwreck It seems to me it's just a sign that you should be indicating things on slides with a laser pointer more often. :blobcatwink:

@dogfox @baldur While the Star Trek episode is coincidentally apropos (and one of my favorites), I was referring to the book on the intertwined history of ideas about race and intelligence by evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould.
books.infosec.exchange/book/44

@baldur I was just saying in a thread the other day how I thought every scientist should read The Mismeasure of Man, and I guess that should very much include computer scientists too.

@JenLucPiquant 'NPR has stopped posting tweets since getting the state-affiliated tag, and updated its bio to read, "NPR is an independent news organization committed to informing the public about the world around us. You can find us every other place you read the news."'

Sounds like the perfect time to lobby NPR to come to Mastodon.
