On the Meta / #Threads issue: although I am more on the side of federating, it's not like a I can't see the danger of having a single monstrous entity possibly outnumbering the rest of the #Fediverse combined. I have no problem server admins choosing not to federate with Threads, I totally get it.

I'm much less keen on the push to make all servers defederate from Threads under the threat of defederation themselves. I think this will just end up in the disintegration of the Fediverse.

@JosephMenn Every time I see a statement like "...and Twitter replied with an automated message containing a poop emoji" in a news story, I am reminded again that we live in the stupidest timeline.

I don’t usually gift breaking news articles before the context and analysis are added. But holy moly, a preliminary injunction against Biden officials communicating with the social media companies. wapo.st/44snxyc

@autiomaa @emc2 We need standardized metadata for folks who want to be part of a public graph to intentionally opt into it (not taking random text strings in their profile text as evidence of consent 🤦)

I think it's worth ideating on how to create a #Facebook / #Meta to #FediVerse migration pipeline, and what one might look like.

I'm at a disadvantage here, because I'm not a UI/UX person, and am pretty inept at it. I do, however, have a high-level sketch of what this might look like.

@emc2 @autiomaa It seems to me the primary barrier is social (within the existing Fediverse) not technical in that sense.

👉 Now that #Threads is official w/ a launch date of July 6th, I wanted to post this for our servers users:

It includes my thoughts on the state of play, our server policies, ways you can help & some thoughts on the coming days.

Spoiler: how we as a Fediverse have JUST handled the #RedditMigration & the #TwitterMigration3 gives me great hope for days, weeks & months ahead.

Up for any notes, or corrections, etc.

Suggestion: Reach out to your local government, emergency service provider, and/or news org. Let them know that Twitter has ended public access to content and that Mastodon is a working alternative *today*. I did this on the weekend with my local emergency folks and this morning I got a reply back saying they had noticed the embedded Twitter feed on their webpage was broken.

They didn't realize Twitter had cut that service. Now, hopefully, they are considering their options including Mastodon.

To be completely honest, I'm pretty excited about #Threads... All the friends I've tried to drag here from Twitter and who have resisted all along for a bunch of reasons (some valid) will be more likely to move to Threads (as most of them already have an #Instagram account).

Which means, even if Threads doesn't federate with the Fediverse, I'll finally be able to ditch Twitter. And if Threads federates, I won't even need to join in order to stay in touch with my friends. And best case scenario, once they finally understand what the Fediverse is all about, they may even join.

No, please, I don't want to hear about "Embrace, extend, and extinguish." First, stop being hypocrites, most of the people shouting it everywhere have learned of the expression two weeks ago, and... I don't have time for your nonsense.

And, if I may, you have a pretty inflated view of what the Fediverse is at the moment if you think Meta has any interest in extinguishing it. It wants to extinguish Twitter, not us. We're irrelevant in its grand scheme of things. (no need to @ me if you disagree, I've way past my quota of debating this already)

@brian Oh good! It's not showing up for me right now, but maybe that's a problem on my end (or some weird aspect of editing + federation). Boost coming your way!

Me: Uhm, mac user ...?

Me: Uhm, Microsoft 365 ...?
IT: Just try a bit harder!
Me: The functionality is in a different place & you turned it off per default.
IT: (half a day later) We found a solution for problem B!
Me: Uhm, problem A, not B.
IT: How about a call?
Me: Uhm, how about calling in your supervisor?
IT: ... Gimme another half day.

@brian This is great! (I would have boosted, but I generally try to mostly boost stuff with alt text.)

So, weekend tally: The number of active users across Mastodon rose by 294K, and posting activity roughly tripled. Lots of new sign-ups, but also many returning users. Fun times!

here's the thing: you might not like #threads, but it still could go a long way to wean people off of #twitter permanently in a way that #mastodon unfortunately doesn't / didn't (and, vicariously, pulling 'em into the greater #fediverse). #socialmedia #community

I cannot see the launch of Instagram’s Threads as anything but a huge win for ActivityPub and the Fediverse. Millions of people now have an easy way to join and skip the headaches of server choice etc. This is GREAT, and furthermore, does not diminish what makes Mastodon great. More of my friends will be here soon. The insular “do not play nice” mentality of hardcore Fediverse advocates just does not appeal to me at all.

@InAFeverDream I hope it treats you well! I've been enjoying it so far, though I was hoping it might grow enough to cause some of the walled gardens to collapse and now I'm skeptical that will happen.
