Mastodon is the place to be...it has the people...the app...and NO ADS!
Meta’s Threads app looks set for an uphill climb if it’s ever to take the microblogging crown.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees that despite its impressive start in early July when around 100 million people activated a Threads account in its first five days of availability, more than half of those users have stopped checking in.

Thank you all so much for your answer to my screen reader question, https://front-end.social/@stephaniewalter/110785489649724145.
Conclusion (from answers here and on other social media):
- write short alt text that describes it, but don't over describe (on the principle that, if I took the screenshot, I deemed the information necessary, aka, not 100% decoration)
- explicitly add that it's a screenshot, this is part of the meaning
Today is my dissertation proposal defense. That means I'll give a public lecture about my research in front of my committee.
As some folks may know, I'm doing another round of grad school, mid-career, focused on scientific decision making in the U.S. Congress https://sheril.substack.com/p/a-dissertation-on-democracy #science #politics
In terms of PhD-ing, this is kind of like the pregame. I passed my comprehensive exams last year & will officially defend my dissertation & finish this Fall. So here goes...
/2 In judging other people’s takes, I respectfully invite you to consider (1) does the author have training and experience with the procedures at issue, (2) does the author insist that their interpretation is the only plausible one, (3) is the tone hysterical, and (4) does the conclusion align 100% with the priors of the author.
@SanGasso lots of weather folks seem to not be moving. Maybe NWS being on there etc. kind of annoying in that sense but I’d prob just keep whining about it ducking there
A Texas jury has found that feeding the homeless is not a crime.
Someone trying to tempt me back to Twitter with this screenshot, saying “come on, won’t it be fun to respond to this?” Their idea of fun may differ from mine.
Lots of people have made fun of my mental illness and openness about it, most often on Twitter. But I’m okay. So far I haven’t looked at one of them and said “wow they seem really happy and successful, I wish I had their life.”
Reposting something I saw earlier on Mastodon (and probably boosted) - A open tab that I got around to reading today. Isn’t it amazing, that when we take a positive approach that helps people instead of punishing them, things get better?
"In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. The reason: The country applies the “Housing First” concept. Those affected by homelessness receive a small apartment and counselling – without any preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected thus make their way back into a stable life. And: All this is cheaper than accepting homelessness.”
@idoubtit Right, not being an expert is why you invite on guests!
That x on my home screen is the final nudge to switch fully over, and dedicate myself to rebuilding my network here. Looking for #FollowFriday recommendations for #CitizenScience #OpenScience #ScientistRebellion #ClimateAction
I'm gonna put this out there: If you are new to #Mastodon and have found people to be hostile, or nitpicky, and just generally unhelpful please @ me and say hi. I am happy to walk you through this place, get you comfortable, be non-judgy about helping you, and help make this place your new home. I'm gonna call this #MastoHelper If others want to help newbies, lets do it together!
We need to do more to make people feel welcome first, that's how you create a culture people want to be part of.
Here’s the inside story of how Meta hustled to build Threads to capitalize on Twitter’s stumbles—with a barebones team staffed almost entirely by engineers, putting off key features and thorny decisions in favor of shipping a minimum viable product ASAP.
By me and @NaomiNix: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/07/29/meta-threads-mark-zuckerberg-rival-twitter-musk/
Twitter's new sign is up.
It's held in place by either sandbags or water bags-- vaspider said they have worked with such bags before at concerts and probably don't walk under it.
Especially on a windy day.
I was born in Houston and lived in it, or just outside of it, for most of my life. 35 years. I’m HORRIFIED— but people need to know:
Houston is NOT doing this. The state of Texas took over the Houston Independent School District some months ago, appointed its own superintendent, and he is the monster doing this shit. The city is against this bullshit.
The state of TEXAS is going after MY CITY. They’ve been winning too many damn elections for the “wrong” candidates and they don’t like it. They’re scared. The bulk of Dem votes come from Houston. Look at the numbers.

Were this this start of a movie, it probably wouldn’t end well. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/29/science/roundworm-nematodes-siberia-permafrost.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare #science #news
@listeninggarden Same with me. I remember my computer always felt like a world of it's own, even before the Internet. But then when we upgraded to a 28.8K baud modem, and using Mac OS 7.5, and Netscape Navigator on it, I felt like my computer was now part of an entire galaxy of worlds, so vast I could never explore it all but I still tried my damndest! Watching this logo meant the next world was approaching and I'd arrive soon. That feeling... I don't think I'll ever experience it ever again.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
